INTRODUCTION

What keeps our faith strong when things around us seem to be collapsing? The five foundations of the Christian faith uphold Christianity, like strong columns supporting a grand building. These five fundamental truths form the foundation for what we believe as Christians. They are essential to our faith, and we are to defend them with our lives. Understanding these pillars not only strengthens our own beliefs, but also helps us explain our faith to others.

“If the foundations be destroyed, What can the righteous do?” —Psalm 11:3 (KJV)

In this collection, we will look at the five foundations of the Christian faith and how they bring us hope and form a solid foundation for our lives. This collection will include:

September 12/15

Today’s Takeaway: Jesus’ second coming gives us power for today and hope for tomorrow.

Week 4 - PILLAR #4 – THE SECOND COMING

I. JESUS IS BACK

A. Jesus

He would return. (John 14:1-6, 27-29)

“Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and then all the peoples of the earth will mourn; and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31He will send out his angels with a loud trumpet, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the sky to the other.” —Matthew 24:30-31

B. The angels

the disciples Jesus would return.

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” 9After he had said this, he was taken up as they were watching, and a cloud took him out of their sight. 10While he was going, they were gazing into heaven, and suddenly two men in white clothes stood by them. 11They said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up into heaven? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come in the same way that you have seen him going into heaven.” —Acts 1:8-11

C. The Apostles believed and

that Jesus would return.

“For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the archangel’s voice, and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.” —1 Thessalonians 4:16

“So also Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.” —Hebrews 9:28

“Look, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn over him. So it is to be. Amen.” —Revelation 1:7

II. WE MUST BE FOR HIS RETURN

A. We must

with patient anticipation.

“Now concerning that day and hour no one knows—neither the angels of heaven nor the Son—except the Father alone.“ —Matthew 24:36

“After a long time the master of those servants came and settled accounts with them.” —Matthew 25:19

“Dear friends, don’t overlook this one fact: With the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day. 9The Lord does not delay his promise, as some understand delay, but is patient with you, not wanting any to perish but all to come to repentance.” —2 Peter 3:8-9

B. Jesus’ return will be sudden and

.

“Therefore be alert, since you don’t know what day your Lord is coming. 43But know this: If the homeowner had known what time the thief was coming, he would have stayed alert and not let his house be broken into. 44This is why you are also to be ready, because the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.” —Matthew 24:42-44

“Therefore be alert, because you don’t know either the day or the hour.” —Matthew 25:13

“But the day of the Lord will come like a thief; on that day the heavens will pass away with a loud noise, the elements will burn and be dissolved, and the earth and the works on it will be disclosed. 11Since all these things are to be dissolved in this way, it is clear what sort of people you should be in holy conduct and godliness.” —2 Peter 3:10-11

III. ARE WE FOR HIS RETURN?

“Therefore, dear friends, while you wait for these things, make every effort to be found without spot or blemish in his sight, at peace.” —2 Peter 3:14

Being Ready Means:

  1. in Jesus for salvation.

  2. as if each day could be our last.

  3. in eternal things over temporal things.

  4. the Good News of Jesus with urgency.

CONCLUSION: What steps do you need to take to be ready for Jesus’ return?
