Below is a reference to the section of the New City Catechism that we went over on Sunday:
The New City Catechism
Lord’s Day 5
What Else Did God Create?
God created all things by his powerful Word, and all his creation was very good; everything flourished under his loving rule. (Genesis 1:31)
Scripture
Hebrews 11:29-31 - (English Standard Version)
- 29 By faith the people crossed the Red Sea as on dry land, but the Egyptians, when they attempted to do the same, were drowned. 30 By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after they had been encircled for seven days. 31 By faith Rahab the prostitute did not perish with those who were disobedient, because she had given a friendly welcome to the spies.
Understanding and Applying
- The Impossible: For each scenario in the passage, what did faith in God’s promises accomplish (vv. 29-32; Ex. 14:15-17; Joshua 2:8-14; 6:1-5)?
- The Tragedy: For each scenario in the passage, what was the response and the end result for those who lacked faith (vv. 29, 31; Ex. 14:27-28; Joshua 6:20-21)?
-
•Typological: For those who lacked faith, how do their efforts, and God’s response to their efforts, point us to the future judgment (2 Thes. 1:6-9; Heb. 11:6)?
- The Benefit: Is it fair to say that often God uses His people to benefit or preserve the lives of others (Ex. 19:6; Joshua 2:12; Job 42:8)?
• Service: How might your own faith, or the church’s witness, benefit others (Matt. 5:16; Gal. 6:10; Eph. 6:4; 1 Pet. 2:9)?
-
• Reflection: What is something that you, or others, have done that can only be attributed to a faith that rests in Jesus (Mk. 9:23; Lk. 7:47; 1 Cor. 15:10; Eph. 6:16)?
