Welcome the Spirit
June 1, 2025

Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
Genesis 1:2

ruwach (roo’-akh); wind; breath, a violent exhalation; blast of breath.

pneuma (pnyoo’-mah); a current of air, blast of breath, a strong breeze; or spirit.

3 Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, unless you are born again, you cannot see the Kingdom of God”… 5 …“I assure you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit. 6 Humans can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit gives birth to spiritual life”… 8 “The wind blows wherever it wants. Just as you can hear the wind but can’t tell where it comes from or where it is going, so you can’t explain how people are born of the Spirit.”
John 3:3,5,6,8

“He is indivisible from the Father and the Son, so that if you were to be suddenly transferred to heaven itself you wouldn’t be any closer to God than you are now, for God is already here.” —A.W. Tozer, How to Be Filled with the Holy Spirit

Above all else, the Holy Spirit is the presence and power of the living Christ within us, in His church, and in the world.

The person of the Holy Spirit confirms, convicts, counsels, and conforms us to the image of Christ revealing the nature of God in us.

16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. 18 I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.
John 14:16-18

“In the library of Scripture, the Holy Spirit is not a vague force like in Star Wars, or a nice feeling one gets in prayer. In Jesus’ teachings, the Spirit is a HE, not an it. The Spirit is a person.” —John Mark Comer

parakletos (par-ak’-lay-tos); to come along side of and speak a message of truth.

• The Holy Spirit is a constant

.

“It is quite right that you should feel that ‘something terrific’ has happened to you (it has) and be ‘all glowy.’ Accept these sensations with thankfulness as birthday cards from God, but remember that they are only greetings, not the real gift. I mean, it is not the sensations that are the real thing. The real thing is the gift of the Holy Spirit which can’t usually be—perhaps not ever—experienced as a sensation or emotion. The sensations are merely the response of your nervous system. Don’t depend on them. Otherwise when they go and you are once more emotionally flat (as you certainly will be quite soon), you might think that the real thing had gone too. But it won’t. It will be there when you can’t feel it. May even be most operative when you can feel it least.” —C.S. Lewis

But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.
John 14:26

• The Holy Spirit never

the Word of God.

15 The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” 16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.
Romans 8:15,16

• The Holy Spirit

that you are a child of God.

7 But in fact, it is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the Advocate won’t come. If I do go away, then I will send him to you. 8 And when he comes, he will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment.
John 16:7,8

• The Holy Spirit

us of sin, us Jesus saves, and us that judgment is coming.

…about sin, because people do not believe in me.
John 16:9

But I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I am leaving; for if I do not leave, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.
John 16:7

• The Holy Spirit

you is better than Jesus you.
