Five Foundational Principles of Technology and Faith

  1. Technology exists because humans are made by a creative God
  2. Technology is God’s gift to humankind to push back the curse.
  3. Technology can lead to both good and evil.
  4. God is Sovereign over Innovation and Innovators.
  5. Technology must be stewarded wisely by God’s people.

What is AI?

• Artificial intelligence is the ability of machines or computer systems to perform tasks that typically require human intelligence.

There are two main types of AI:

• Narrow AI
• AGI, or Artificial General Intelligence

Google Gemini interaction:

How would you describe the way that Gemini works to someone who is just learning about artificial intelligence?

Imagine Gemini as a super-smart, digital assistant.

It’s like having a really intelligent friend who has read countless books, watched endless videos, and listened to countless conversations. This knowledge helps Gemini understand and respond to your questions and requests in a way that feels natural and human-like.

Here’s how it works:

Learning: Gemini learns from massive amounts of information, like text, code, images, and even audio. This helps it understand patterns and relationships between different kinds of data.

Understanding: When you ask Gemini something, it processes your request and uses its knowledge to find the best answer.

Responding: Gemini then provides an answer or completes a task based on its understanding. This could be anything from writing an email or poem to solving a math problem or creating an image.

Think of it as a powerful tool that can help you with a wide range of tasks, from getting information to being creative.

Living Wisely with AI

1) SEEK GOD’S WISDOM

Proverbs 4:5-7

Get wisdom, get understanding;
do not forget my words or turn away from them.
Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you;
love her, and she will watch over you.
The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom.
Though it cost all you have, get understanding.

James 1:5

If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.

2) GIVE THANKS AND USE AI FOR GOOD

Micah 6:8

He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.

James 3:6-13

The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.

With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be.

Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.

• Fight back the effects of the curse
• Improve human life
• Empower people
• Glorify God
• Commit to the common good

3) DON’T MAKE AI OR ANY TECH AN IDOL

Exodus 20:3

“You shall have no other gods before me”
