This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created… —Genesis 2:4
Genesis 1 is looking at creation
Genesis 2 is looking at man within creation

Man is finite

Then the Lord God formed man of dust from the ground. —Genesis 2:7

Man bears God’s image

Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness.” —Genesis 1:26

Our conscience illustrates that we have the Law of God on our hearts.

Man is personal

Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness;” —Genesis 1:26
“It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him.” —Genesis 2:18

Man is a ruler

“and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth” —Genesis 1:26

Man possesses dignity and honor

God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. —Genesis 1:27
…show her honor as a fellow heir of the grace of life —I Peter 3:7

Man receives blessings

God blessed them; and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply…” —Genesis 1:28

Man has responsibilities

Then the Lord God took the man and put him into the garden of Eden to cultivate it and keep it. —Genesis 2:15

Man is thankful

“Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the surface of all the earth…it shall be food for you.” —Genesis 1:29

Man is a worshiper

Man receives awe and wonder

Out of the ground the Lord God caused to grow every tree that is pleasing to the sight and good for food;
the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. —Genesis 2:9

Man has human volition

The Lord God commanded the man, saying, “From any tree of the garden you may eat freely; but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.” —Genesis 2:16-17
So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then He took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh at that place. —Genesis 2:21
The Lord God fashioned into a woman the rib which he had taken from the man, and brought her to the man. —Genesis 2:22
For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh. —Genesis 2:24
O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth…from the mouth of infants and nursing babes You have established strength. —Psalm 8:1-2
When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have ordained. What is man that You take thought of him, and the son of man that You care for him? —Psalm 8:3-4
Yet You have made him a little lower than God, and You crown him with glory and majesty! You make him to rule over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet. —Psalm 8:5-6
But one has testified somewhere saying, “What is man that you remember him? Or the son of man, that you are concerned about him? You made him for a little while lower than the angels; you have crowned him with glory and honor, and have appointed him over the works of your hands; you have put all things in subjection under his feet.” —Hebrews 2:6-8
But now we do not yet see all things subjected to him. —Hebrews 2:8
But we do see Him who was made for a little while lower than the angels, namely, Jesus, because of the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. For it was fitting for him…to bring many sons to glory. —Hebrews 2:9-10

Take home truth

Man is finite and fragile, but we are the climax and center of God’s creation.

Study Guide

Small Group ice breaker question: If you could meet any man/woman (besides Jesus) in all of history, who would it be and why? What question might you ask them?

  1. What’s the main idea or “plank” of Genesis 2?

  2. Are there two different creation accounts? How would you answer this question? How does this chapter correspond to chapter 1?

  3. Mankind has been termed “vice regent.” What is meant by this description? What is God’s purpose for humanity?

  4. How many “needs” do you see God providing in Genesis 2:9? What are they? Is anything missing?

  5. Genesis 2:19-20 describes how God allowed man to name the animals. What is this communicating to Adam?

  6. Where do you see the Gospel or a picture of Jesus in Genesis 2?

  7. How does Genesis 2 impact your present situation? Your life and relationships? Be as specific as you can.
