Sin Undone

RECAP

Week 1: Bondage Undone
• Because of the original sin in the garden in Genesis Three, everyone is born into the bondage of sin.
• God got directly involved - revealing what kind of bondage the world was in
• God provided deliverance through his son Jesus Christ

Week 2: Judgement Undone
• Judgment, being undone, and what Jesus did for us on the cross
• Play, Jesus was Judge, so I didn’t have to be

This week: Sin Undone

Sanctification is the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives as we are progressively being changed, freeing us more and more from sinful traits and developing within us Christlike character and holiness as we cooperate with the Holy Spirit with a wholehearted response of obedience and spiritual disciplines. Ezekiel 36:26-27 NLT

1. Justification is legal; sanctification is transformation.
a. Justification is the opposite of condemnation
b. Unlike justification, sanctification is transformational. Sanctification isn’t a change in status but an actual change in the human condition. Justification is being declared forgiven and righteous, but sanctification is being made righteous and holy.

2. Justification happens all at once; sanctification is a journey last a lifetime.
a. A change in status, justification is immediate, final and complete. A person doesn’t become justified over time, and a person doesn’t become more or less justified throughout their life.

  1. Jesus’ work on the cross is justification; Jesus’ life is the pattern for sanctification.
Sanctification is not perfection, it’s a process.
    • In the sanctification process, God transforms His people over time to resemble Jesus; it doesn’t happen all at once.

1 Peter 2:2 NLT
This means as Christians we should expect to make progress, to grow and become more loving, kind, humble and self-controlled over our lifetime. While there may be occasional setbacks and life-long struggles, God makes His people holy in the long run.
Philippians 3:12–14 NLT — Romans 7:15 NLT
The devil will always have you focus on your past, or what you’re doing or not doing, we need focus on what Jesus has already done!
Sanctification is not natural
Romans 7:5-6 NLT
Because sanctification is a process, there will always be conflict within us between the “flesh,” or the sinful nature, and the Holy Spirit.
Galatians 5:17 NLT

Sanctification results from the supernatural presence and power of the Holy Spirit working in a Christian’s life
Galatians 5:22–26 NLT — Ephesians 3:19-20 NLT — Romans 6:5-7 NLT
It requires a change of heart, an alignment of the will with God’s will. Sanctification means learning to love what God loves and value what God values.
Sanctification doesn’t mean we won’t struggle with sin
• We will no longer be dominated by the power of sin.

Ephesians 5:1–2 NLT — 1 Peter 1:13-16 NLT
How do we follow after Jesus’ pattern when he is perfect and we are not?
• The struggle is real, let’s look at a few verses that can help us understand our part in dealing with sin.

Ephesians 4:20-24 NLT — Hebrews 12:1-4 NLT — 1 John 1:6-9 NLT
How do we battle the sin that is in our lives?
Proverbs 28:13-14 NLT — James 5:16 NLT
