A Shady Family Christmas

IN JESUS’ DAY, YOUR RÉSUMÉ WAS NOT ABOUT YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS, BUT ABOUT YOUR FAMILY, YOUR PEDIGREE, AND YOUR CLAN.

“1 The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ.…3 Judah the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar…. 5 and Salmon the father of Boaz by Rahab, and Boaz the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse, 6 and Jesse the father of David the king. And David was the father of Solomon by the wife of Uriah…. 16 and Jacob the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is called Christ.” —Matthew 1:1, 3, 5, 6, 16

WHAT’S HANGING ON JESUS’ FAMILY TREE?

Incest & Deception: Judah and Tamar

“14 she took off her widow’s garments and covered herself with a veil, wrapping herself up, and sat at the entrance to Enaim, which is on the road to Timnah. For she saw that Shelah was grown up, and she had not been given to him in marriage. 15 When Judah saw her, he thought she was a prostitute, for she had covered her face. 16 He turned to her at the roadside and said, “Come, let me come in to you,” for he did not know that she was his daughter-in-law. She said, “What will you give me, that you may come in to me?” 17 He answered, “I will send you a young goat from the flock.” And she said, “If you give me a pledge, until you send it—” 18 He said, “What pledge shall I give you?” She replied, “Your signet and your cord and your staff that is in your hand.” So he gave them to her and went in to her, and she conceived by him.” —Genesis 38:14–18

Prostitution & Treason: Rahab

“1 And Joshua the son of Nun sent two men secretly from Shittim as spies, saying, “Go, view the land, especially Jericho.” And they went and came into the house of a prostitute whose name was Rahab and lodged there. 2 And it was told to the king of Jericho, “Behold, men of Israel have come here tonight to search out the land.” 3 Then the king of Jericho sent to Rahab, saying, “Bring out the men who have come to you, who entered your house, for they have come to search out all the land.” 4 But the woman had taken the two men and hidden them. And she said, “True, the men came to me, but I did not know where they were from. 5 And when the gate was about to be closed at dark, the men went out. I do not know where the men went. Pursue them quickly, for you will overtake them.”” —Joshua 2:1–5

Adultery & Murder: David and “The wife of Uriah”

“3 And David sent and inquired about the woman. And one said, “Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?” 4 So David sent messengers and took her, and she came to him, and he lay with her…. 5 And the woman conceived, and she sent and told David, “I am pregnant.”” —2 Samuel 11:3–5

“14 In the morning David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it by the hand of Uriah. 15 In the letter he wrote, “Set Uriah in the forefront of the hardest fighting, and then draw back from him, that he may be struck down, and die.”” —2 Samuel 11:14–15

An Unfair Reputation: Mary

“18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. 19 And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly.” —Matthew 1:18–19

“41 “You are doing the works your father did.” They said to him, “We were not born of sexual immorality. We have one Father—even God.”” —John 8:41

WHEN GOD MAKES YOUR STORY PART OF HIS STORY, YOUR GREATEST SHAME BECOMES HIS GREATEST STRENGTH.

“7 So to keep me from becoming conceited because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from becoming conceited. 8 Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me. 9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong. —2 Corinthians 12:7–10
