The Tower of Babel - A Gracious Scattering

Introduction: Priming the pump for tonight’s discussion.

Let’s begin with our own observations.  Was there a moment where God spoke to you, showed you something new, or reminded you of a familiar truth through the message this week?

Exploration: Questions to guide our group discussion.

  1. One of the main dangers in throughout the whole Biblical narrative is the idea of “making a name for ourselves.” In the Tower of Babel, making a name for ourselves looked like building a city and a tower while settling in one place rather than filling the whole earth - a result of their pride.

    • What does “making a name for yourself” look like in today’s larger cultural context?
    • What are some specific areas in our own lives where, if we’re not watchful, we can make a name for ourselves rather than making a name for Christ?
  2. Whether it’s building influence at work, a good reputation in the community or an image that’s above reproach, the Tower of Babel helped us see that God is more interested in WHY we build rather than WHAT we build.

    • How can we make sure our reason for building these things aligns God’s heart? (Micah 6:6-8 may be a good place to start.)
  3. The story of Babel helps us see that even though humanity can and often does rebel against God, He is still faithful to come down and mercifully intervene on our behalf.

    • Can anyone think of any other stories in scripture where God intervened on someone’s behalf to show mercy?
    • Would anyone like to share a time in their own lives where God was merciful towards you and “…came down…” to intervene?

Additional Scriptures for Deeper Study:

  • Jeremiah 9:23
  • 1 John 2:16
  • Deuteronomy 8:11-19

Application: How can I apply this to my life this week?

  • As you go to work, school or any other area God has placed you in, pray that God would align your heart with His. Pray that wherever you go, you would make God’s name great instead of your own.

  • Look for moments where God might want to use you in order to intervene in the life of another person. It might look like simply praying with someone, asking someone how their day is going, or sharing the gospel.
