The Heartbeat of Home
Celebrating Moms
Happy Mother’s Day! No one can doubt the influence of a mother. Hundreds of years ago, George Washington said, “My
mother was the most beautiful woman I ever saw. All I am I owe to my mother. I attribute my success in life to the moral,
intellectual, and physical education I received from her.”
Stevie Wonder said this about his Mom: “Mama was my greatest teacher, a teacher of compassion, love and fearlessness. If
love is sweet as a flower, then my mother is that sweet flower of love.”
Lady Gaga said that: “Acceptance, tolerance, bravery, compassion. These are the things my mom taught me.”
Today, we are here to honor the Moms and women in our midst. Romans 13:7 says that we are to, “Give everyone what you
owe him: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.” We aren’t going
to talk about paying taxes, but giving respect and honor to those we owe it most to: our Moms.
Mother’s Day is a chance to express our honor and appreciation to those God has given us as Moms. That is God’s desire.
Ephesians 6:1-3:
“Children, obey your parents because you belong to the Lord, for this is the right thing to do. “Honor your father and
mother.” This is the first commandment with a promise: If you honor your father and mother, “things will go well for you,
and you will have a long life on the earth.”
The key to
a promise, and the promise was that if we would honor our parents, we would enjoy a long life here upon the earth, and things
would go well with us.
Motherhood can be summed up in one phrase: “The Heartbeat of Home”. And there is no clearer picture of Moms as the
Heartbeat of Home than Proverbs 31:10-31:
“10 Who can find a virtuous wife? For her worth is far above rubies.
11 The heart of her husband safely trusts her; So he will have no lack of gain.
12 She does him good and not evil all the days of her life.
13 She seeks wool and flax, and willingly works with her hands.
14 She is like the merchant ships, she brings her food from afar.
15 She also rises while it is yet night, and provides food for her household, and a portion for her maidservants.
16 She considers a field and buys it; from her profits she plants a vineyard.
17 She girds herself with strength, and strengthens her arms.
18 She perceives that her merchandise is good, and her lamp does not go out by night.
19 She stretches out her hands to the distaff, and her hand holds the spindle.
20 She extends her hand to the poor, yes, she reaches out her hands to the needy.
21 She is not afraid of snow for her household, for all her household is clothed with scarlet.
22 She makes tapestry for herself; Her clothing is fine linen and purple.
23 Her husband is known in the gates, when he sits among the elders of the land.
24 She makes linen garments and sells them, and supplies sashes for the merchants.
25 Strength and honor are her clothing; She shall rejoice in time to come.
1
26 She opens her mouth with wisdom, and on her tongue is the law of kindness.
27 She watches over the ways of her household, and does not eat the bread of idleness.
28 Her children rise up and call her blessed; Her husband also, and he praises her:
29 “Many daughters have done well, but you excel them all.”
30 Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, but a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised.
31 Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her own works praise her in the gates.”
Proverbs 31:10–31 is an acrostic poem; meaning that each verse begins with a successive letter of the Hebrew alphabet. The
Book of Proverbs begins with the Prologue (1:1–7), which gives the goal of wisdom which is the fear or honor or reverence of
the Lord (Proverbs 1:7). Now it concludes with this Epilogue (v.10–31), which honors women and Moms and shows wisdom in
action in everyday life.
The opening words describe “a virtuous wife”. The word “virtuous” here has the basic idea of strength and influence. It is not
so much about the perfection of purity, but strength and influence. This idea of influence and strength is what really sums up
Moms. The phrase a “virtuous wife” speaks of influence, strength, moral worth, dignity, and nobility. A woman like this is
wisdom in action. Being a Mom is all about
Michael Jordan said that “My mother is my root, my foundation. She planted the seed that I base my life on, and that is the
belief that the ability to achieve starts in your mind.”
