Reflections on Sunday’s Sermon

Below is a reference to the section of the New City Catechism that we went over on Sunday:

The New City Catechism

Lord’s Day 44

What is Baptism?
Baptism is the washing with water in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit; it signifies and seals our adoption into Christ, our cleansing from sin, and our commitment to belong to the Lord and to his church. (Matthew 28:19)

Scripture

Hebrews 10:26-31 - (English Standard Version)

26 For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 but a fearful expectation of judgment, and a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries. 28 Anyone who has set aside the law of Moses dies without mercy on the evidence of two or three witnesses. 29 How much worse punishment, do you think, will be deserved by the one who has trampled underfoot the Son of God, and has profaned the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has outraged the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know him who said, “Vengeance is mine; I will repay.” And again, “The Lord will judge his people.” 31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

Understanding and Applying

  1. Deliberate: Who are those who “go on sinning deliberately after receiving a knowledge of the truth” (v. 29; John 15:5-6; Romans 11:20-22; 2 Peter 2:20-21; 1 John 2:19)?

    1. Secure: Though the passage is a severe warning to be heeded by the church, why won’t the consequences of the warning be realized among true saints (John 6:39; Hebrews 6:9; 1 Peter 1:3-5)?

  2. Warning: How is profaning the new covenant worse than profaning the Mosaic covenant (vv. 26-31; Hebrews 6:4-6)?

    1. Greater: Why is profaning the new covenant worse than profaning the Mosaic covenant (Hebrews 4:8-11, 8:5-7, 9:11-14)?

3. Judgment: In your own words, what does the future hold for those who end up rejecting the blood of Christ and the work of the Spirit (vv. 27-31; 2 Thessalonians 1:8-9)?

Example: How have warnings been used in your own life to preserve you from grave danger?

4. Attributes: Despite the severity of the warning, what does it suggest about the character of our God (v. 30; Hebrews 12:5-6)?
