Lawsuits in the Church

Associate Pastor Adrian Garcia
1 Corinthians 6:1-11

Main point: In 1 Corinthians 6:1-11, Paul gives three reasons Christians should not resolve conflict the same way the world does.

I. Taking Another Believer to Court is Unreasonable
Verses 1-6

II. Taking Another Believer to Court is Unchristlike
Verses 7-8

III. Taking Another Believer to Court is Unmerciful
Verses 9-11

Here are some books which may assist you in deeper study and application of the truths presented in today’s sermon. While the elders cannot endorse every concept presented in each book, we do believe these resources will be helpful in profitably thinking through today’s topic.

Questions for Spiritual Growth

Our Cornerstone mission is To Know Christ and Make Him Known. Community Groups help us to live out our mission as we discuss the Scripture passage from the sermon, how to apply it, and pray for one another.

  1. Read 1 Corinthians 6:1, 6; John 15:34-35; I John 4:20-21. How can unresolved conflict within the church hinder its witness to the world? When conflict arises, how can believers respond in ways that preserve and even strengthen the church’s testimony?

  2. Read 1 Corinthians 6:2-5. How would you describe the church’s role in helping believers resolve personal conflict? What does it look like for a church, both as individual and as a community, to be equipped to handle conflict biblically?

  3. Read 1 Corinthians 6:5; Matthew 5:38-42; Ephesians 4:1-3. How should believers respond when they are wronged by another believer? Is it possible to address the issue without escalating the conflict? If so, what might that look like in practice?

  4. Read 1 Corinthians 6:8-10; Galatians 5:13-26. What warning does Scripture give to those who frequently engage in conflict, dissension, or division within the church? How would you lovingly minister to someone who shows this pattern in their life?

  5. Read 1 Corinthians 6:11; Titus 3:1-11. What hope does the Gospel offer to believers who have handled conflict poorly in the past? How can a believer grow in responding to conflict in a way that honors God and reflects their new identity in Christ?
