Do Not Quench - Walk in the Spirit

Message Study Questions

Message Summary

True spirituality is being filled by the Spirit of God. Every follower of Christ has been saved and given the indwelling Holy Spirit of God, but not every Christian is filled by the Spirit. To be filled by the Holy Spirit, He must be in the driver’s seat, directing our life which will manifest our transformation in Christ.

There are three conditions for living filled with the Holy Spirit.

First, do not grieve the Spirit by continuing in known sin.
The solution is to confess it to God.

The second is to not quench the Holy Spirit, which means to resist the revealed will of God, and particularly to resist the Spirit’s providential leading in favor of our own agenda. The solution is to yield to the Spirit, renew our minds on God’s truth (the Bible), which enables us to test human ideas and discern good from evil.

The third condition for living a Spirit filled life is to walk continually in the Spirit by relying on Him.
Abiding reliance results in effective prayer, complete joy, and perpetual fruit. When you do not grieve the Spirit nor quench the Spirit, but instead live yielded to God’s will with an abiding reliance – you are filled by the Spirit of God, transformed continually and empowered to live a holy, righteous life.

  1. In our society today, do you think we can know right from wrong, good from evil? How?

  2. What things exert the most influence on your life today?

Consider This

“It is not a question of being willing to do one thing, but a willingness to do anything that God would lead you to do.” - Lewis Sperry-Chafer

When we live yielded to God, we are then able to abide/remain in Him and His will is carried out in our lives.

  1. Can you share what you experience when you are filled with the Holy Spirit?

  2. Read 1 Thessalonians 5:19-22.

    • What does it mean to stifle the Holy Spirit? What does that look like in your life?

    • What does scoffing at prophecies mean to us today?

    • What does it mean to “test everything that is said?” Why is it important and how do you do it?

  3. How do you show respect for the presence of the Holy Spirit inside you?

  4. How can/do you quench the Holy Spirit?

  5. How do we tell if the Holy Spirit is actually working in our lives?

  6. Read Romans 12:1-2.

    • Why does God have a right for all-in commitment from you?

    • What are some worldly customs or behaviors that Christians are tempted to conform to?

    • How can you renew your mind? What will be the result?

  7. Read Galatians 5:16.

    • How do you stay dependent upon the Holy Spirit’s power?

    • What will you be able to overcome by depending on the Holy Spirit? Can you do this without depending on the Holy Spirit?

  8. Consider John 15:4-7. How do you remain in the words of Jesus?

  9. What does complete joy look like to you? (John 15:11)

Moving Forward – Application

One of the biggest results from the fall is “the independence of the human will toward God; yet man is most spiritual and most confirmed to the design of his Maker when he is most yielded to the Divine will.” - Chafer

  1. This week, pray these simple prayers:

    • “Spirit, what areas of my life am I not yielding to you?”
    • And “Spirit, I trust You and need You to do this work in me to live this out,”

  2. What step(s) could you take to eliminate bad habits this week?

  3. What step(s) could you take to maintain your friendship with God this week?

  4. What steps will you take to live continually filled with the Holy Spirit?
