What were the seven last sayings of Jesus?
- “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do” (Luke 23:34).
This line reflects the profound forgiveness and mercy of Jesus Christ, especially towards those who have grossly wronged Him. And that is all of us. And that is why it underscores the importance of forgiveness regardless of the weight of the offense–we forgive because we have been forgiven.
GOD FORGIVES
- “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise” (Luke 23:43)
This line illustrates the promise of salvation and redemption—Today is the day of salvation. It is the forever promise of eternal life to those who repent and place their life in Christ.
GOD FREELY GIVES
- “Woman, behold your son!” 27 Then He said to the disciple, “Behold your mother!” (John 19:26-27).
This line demonstrates Jesus’ care for His mother even amid His own suffering, entrusting her to the care of His disciple. It emphasizes the importance of spiritual bonds and how the Church is a family because of Jesus’ blood, which runs deeper than biological blood.
GOD FORGES FAMILY.
- “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” (Matthew 27:46).
This line portrays a moment of intense vulnerability and spiritual anguish as Jesus expresses His feelings of abandonment. But more than that, it not only underscores God’s profound identification with the human experience of despair, but it also serves as a testament to divine providence as it fulfills the prophecy of Psalm 22.
GOD FEELS.
- “I thirst!” (John 19:28).
This line humanizes Jesus’ suffering on the cross, highlighting His agony and longing for reunion with the Father. It also serves as a physical picture of a spiritual hole in the soul that can only be satisfied or fulfilled by the Gospel of Christ.
GOD FULFILLS
- “It is finished!” (John 19:30).
This line signifies the completion of Jesus’ mission. It is the fulfillment of His purpose to bring salvation to humanity through His sacrifice on the cross of Calvary. It represents the victory over sin and death, highlighting the significance of His atoning sacrifice, to pay our sin debt in full.
GOD FINISHES WHAT HE STARTS
- “Father, ‘into Your hands I commit My spirit’” (Luke 23:46).
This line signifies Jesus’ complete surrender to the will of His Father, expressing trust and submission even in the very face of death. It underscores the profound truth that death did not take Jesus, but Jesus took death. And what is committed to the Father’s hands cannot be taken by death nor man.
