The Message from the Manger: God is in Control

Senior Pastor Jeff Maness

Sovereignty = Supreme power or authority

Big Idea: God doesn’t cause everything to happen, but only God can use everything for His cause.

Big Question: Where do we see God’s sovereign control in the manger?
Main Scripture: Luke 2:1-7

At that time the Roman emperor, Augustus, decreed that a census should be taken throughout the Roman Empire. 3 All returned to their own ancestral towns to register for this census. 4 And because Joseph was a descendant of King David, he had to go to Bethlehem in Judea, David’s ancient home. He traveled there from the village of Nazareth in Galilee. 5 He took with him Mary, to whom he was engaged, who was now expecting a child. —Luke 2:1, 3-5

And while they were there, the time came for her baby to be born. 7 She gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him snugly in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger, because there was no lodging available for them. —Luke 2:6-7

Where do we see God’s sovereign control in the manger?
1. He is sovereign over our circumstances.

But you, O Bethlehem, are only a small village among all the people of Judah. Yet a ruler of Israel, whose origins are in the distant past, will come from you on my behalf. —Micah 5:2

“God, how do You want to use this?”

And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. —Romans 8:28

Where do we see God’s sovereign control in the manger?
1. He is sovereign over our circumstances.
2. He is sovereign over worldly command.

But when the right time came, God sent his Son, born of a woman, subject to the law. —Galatians 4:4
