SERMON NOTES
Firm Foundation - Zach Lamberson
Matthew 5:31-32 - Marriage and Divorce
1. We have devalued the covenant of marriage
2. What is God-given needs to be God-governed
3. Marriage is defined by God because He created it
Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. Genesis 2:24-25, NKJV
4. One of the purposes of marriage is godly offspring
Hasn’t he made the two of you one? Both of you belong to him in body and spirit. And why has he made you one? Because he was looking for godly children. So guard yourself in your spirit. Don’t break your promise to the wife you married when you were young. Malachi 2:15, NIrV
5. The sexual union is blessed by God when it is in the context of marriage
Drink water from your own well—share your love only with your wife. Why spill the water of your springs in the streets, having sex with just anyone? Proverbs 5:15-16, NLT
6. Divorce was permitted but not commanded by God in the Law
Suppose a man marries a woman but she does not please him. Having discovered something wrong with her, he writes a document of divorce, hands it to her, and sends her away from his house. Deuteronomy 24:1, NLT
7. Matthew 19:3-9
8. God hates divorce because of the violence it causes
“For the LORD God of Israel says That He hates divorce, For it covers one’s garment with violence,” Says the LORD of hosts. “Therefore take heed to your spirit, That you do not deal treacherously.” Malachi 2:16, NKJV
9. There are 2 biblical reasons for divorce
1. Fornication
2. Abandonment
But if the unbeliever departs, let him depart; a brother or a sister is not under bondage in such cases. But God has called us to peace. 1 Cor. 7:15, NKV
10. Application
To the unmarried: Don’t call common what God has called sacred
Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s. 1 Cor. 6:19-20, NKJV
The wife gives authority over her body to her husband, and the husband gives authority over his body to his wife. (1 Cor. 7:4)
- He who finds a wife finds a good thing, And obtains favor from the LORD. (Proverbs 18:22, NKJV)
- To those struggling: Your identity isn’t your sin but your adoption
God sent (Jesus) to buy freedom for us who were slaves to the law, so that he could adopt us as his very own children. And because we are his children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, prompting us to call out, “Abba, Father.” Now you are no longer a slave but God’s own child. And since you are his child, God has made you his heir. Galatians 4:5-7, NLT
- To those married: Let grace prevail
