PRAY
We are back on Peter’s journey with Jesus today. Before diving in, take a moment to pause and pray. Today, write out your own preparatory prayer, offering God your time and focus. Ask Him for any grace and peace you may need over this time.
THE MIRACULOUS CATCH
The story you are about to read in Luke has often been lumped in as an expanded version of Jesus’ initial calling of the fishermen disciples found in Matthew 4 and Mark 1 (which we studied on Day 2 of this devotional). Because of where this falls in the book of Luke, which is the gospel that is specifically written in chronological order (see Luke 1:1-4), it is quite apparent this is a seperate moment where Jesus wants to teach Peter and the disciples a lesson.
READ AND CONTEMPLATE LUKE 5:1-11
Read the text slowly and carefully, taking time to really soak in what is happening. Use your imagination to pretend you are Peter in this moment. Imagine yourself seeing these events unfold in person.
Take a moment to recount in your own words what happened in this story.
As you put yourself in Peter’s sandals, what especially strikes you in this story?
MAKE IT PERSONAL
This is not the first time Peter is on the lake fishing and Jesus tells him he is moving from being a fisherman to being a fisher of men. When is a time where you felt God had to let you know more than once where He is leading you?
As you consider where Jesus is currently leading you, what is the message you need repeated to you again and again for it to settle in?
BOTTOM LINE
In John 1, Jesus called out Peter by name. In Mark 1 and Matthew 4, Jesus invited Peter out of a life of catching fish and into a life of following Him. In Luke 5, Jesus is making it clear that He has the power to do what He says He will do in the life of Peter. In response, Peter sees who He is in comparison to Jesus. If we are going to get to the There that Jesus is calling us toward, we have to see Him for who He is.
