Daniel 3:1-18

3:2-12 | At least two reasons can be proposed for Nebuchadnezzar’s decree: it reflected his desire to create a unified religion within his vast empire and his desire to deify himself. There may have been as many as 300,000 people present from all over the vast empire, including all the officials of the provinces. All of them bowed down except for three Jews.

3:8-12 | Shadrach, Meschach, and Abed-Nego stood when everyone else knelt; later, everyone will stand while Daniel kneels (6:6-10). All four men were out of step with the world but utterly in step with God.

3:13-18 | One of the greatest statements of faith in all the Bible is found in this passage. The three Hebrew friends simply stood their ground and told the king they would serve their God to the end, regardless of the outcome (Isa. 26:3-4; Job 13:15). That is the kind of faith that is desperately needed today.

3:16-18 | This is God’s promise to His people – not to spare them from the fire but to provide for them in the midst of it, be that escorting them into heaven or allowing them to live to see another day.
