Built Differently

Week three - Different Generosity
Luke 12:13-21

Bottom line: Building differently requires a kingdom mentality instead of a scarcity mentality.

Built Different(ly) -
We need a foundation on Jesus.
We need parameters so our priorities can be built on what matters most and not what fixes now.
We need a

mentality and not a mentality.

Scarcity mentality - focusing on what you don’t have and the underlying belief that you’ll never have enough, or you’ll never have the things you want

Jesus had some thoughts on this kind of thinking -

13 Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”
14 Jesus replied, “Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?” 15 Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”

16 And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest. 17 He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’
18 “Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. 19 And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.” ’ —Luke 12:13-19

Scarcity and greed are a

business.

20 “But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?
21 “This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.” —Luke 12:20-21

Kingdom mentality - focusing on what God wants because we can trust that He knows what we need.

Generosity is the activity of people who believe they are free to give.

God builds and makes beautiful things, and He invites us to be part of it.
But sometimes we have to start by giving up what we thought we wanted, and what our fears told us we needed.

We keep trying to build bigger barns that don’t master us even though Jesus told us it doesn’t work.

Our Building
We need people who want to be part of building God’s kingdom in Summerville - NOW.HERE.
We need generous people who aren’t thinking about how much they “should” give, but how much they “can” give.

*A place to start - **Make an “instead” gift.
