The One Who Is Spiritual

Message Study Questions

Message Summary

The Holy Spirit isn’t a mystical force or power, but rather He is God. God is three persons in one: God the Father, the Son (Jesus) and the Holy Spirit. They are in substance all God and yet three separate persons. The Bible, which contains God’s revelation to people, was inspired by the Holy Spirit. Scriptures reveal that Jesus Christ died on the cross to pay for our sins so we can connect with Him forever. However, only the Holy Spirit can illumine the mind to comprehend the Bible. What man learns by seeing, hearing or figuring things out falls short of the really important things, the spiritual truths revealed by the Holy Spirit.

There are only three categories of people: the natural person (unbelievers), the spiritual person (Believers who are led by the Spirit) and worldly believers (believers controlled by their sinful natures).

To the natural man, Christianity and the gospel are foolishness—they cannot understand the Bible.

A Worldy Believer believes in Jesus, the Holy Spirit, and understands God’s revelation. However, they are ruled by their selfish desires and sinful nature.

A Spiritual Believer believes in Jesus, the Holy Spirit, understands God’s revelation. He is lead by the Holy Spirit which indwells in all believers. He is no longer lead by the world.

A person’s first crucial step is to move from a natural man to a believer by deciding to follow Christ and becoming “born again”, born of the spirit. The second movement, which can come with the first, is to be a spiritual believer. Both movements require the ministry of the Holy Spirit, which is critical in our lives. He begins and sustains with an abiding presence in our lives.

The Holy Spirit restrains evil, convicts people and regenerates believers, sealing them with eternal promise and presence.

  1. Who are you? Are you a natural person, a spiritual person, or a worldly believer? Why?

  2. Who is on the throne of your life, yourself or God? How does this work for you?

Consider This

God is relational by nature. Only a Triune God with three persons co-equal, co-eternal can have this attribute. From all eternity, these three have loved one another and are in fact, love by nature.

  1. Read Mark 1:10-11. Explain the Trinity from this verse. Why is it important to understand that God is eternally existent in three persons?

  2. “All Scripture is inspired by God…” (2 Timothy 3:16a) Who wrote the Bible according to 2 Peter 1:21? How do 1 Corinthians 2:12-13 and John 14:26 relate to this truth?

  3. Why can’t unbelievers understand the Bible and the gospel message? (1 Corinthians 2:14, see also Romans 1:20-21)

  4. Read 1 Corinthians 2:15-16 and explain what it means and how it applies to you?

  5. What are the two primary characteristics of a worldly Christian according to 1 Corinthians 3:3, Romans 8:5-7, and Galatians 3:3?

  6. Can the spiritual believer discern what is true and what is false? (see John 16:13) How does that apply to your life?

  7. What does living in true freedom look like according to Romans 8:9 and 1 Corinthians 6:12. What does living in slavery look like according to 2 Peter 2:19?

  8. Why is faith necessary for the Holy Spirit to have control of your life?

  9. Read the following and list other ways the Holy Spirit ministers to people

    • John 16:8-10
    • John 3:6, Titus 3:5
    • Acts 1:8
    • Ephesians 1:13-14, 4:30

Moving Forward – Application

If you are grasping to control things to get your desires, you can’t, at the same time, be controlled by the Holy Spirit.

  1. Read Galatians 3:3 and ask the Holy Spirit to guide you each day this week.

  2. When you sense the Holy Spirit’s leading through His word this week, determine to take immediate action, or immediately refrain from action. Trust in the Holy Spirit for strength and wisdom.

  3. Read Galatians 5:22-23 and ask the Holy Spirit to produce spiritual fruit in your life. Focus on one fruit that God brings to mind each day this week.

  4. Read Galatians 5:19-21 and ask the Holy Spirit to crucify the desire of your sinful nature that bothers you the most this week.
