Sermon Title: Stillness in a world of chaos
Scripture: Luke 5:15-16
The news about [Jesus] spread all the more, so that crowds of people came to hear him and to be healed of their sicknesses. But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed. NIV - Luke 5:15-16
“It’s now possible to completely banish solitude from your life.” “Digital Minimalism” - Cal Newport
I. When you read the Gospels, you notice in Jesus’ life a rhythm of retreat and return.
II. Reasons we give for not practicing solitude
I’m an extrovert; I don’t like being alone
I’m a parent with young kids
I have a very busy life.
What about social justice, mission, evangelism, community outreach, etc?
III. What solitude is not:
Solitude is not the same as isolation.
Solitude is not aloneness.
IV. The wilderness/quiet place isn’t just a place, it’s a practice.
