Zechariah 14:1-21

14:1-2 | Jerusalem will be ruined and ravished in the day of the LORD, which refers to the severe judgments in the Tribulation period (Zeph. 1:14-18) and those accompanying the Second Advent.

14:2 | This battle against Jerusalem by all the nations is an early stage of the siege by the confederated Gentile armies described in 12:2-9 in conjunction with the Battle of Armageddon. Before God destroys the Gentile armies, they will initially taste victory in Jerusalem. Either half of the population of Jerusalem will be left in the city (perhaps under enemy occupation), or the Lord will return to destroy the enemies before their job is more than half completed.

14:8 | Living waters were from a spring rather than the stagnant water from a cistern (Jer. 2:13). Zechariah pictures water flowing from Jerusalem to the east and the west. Jesus Himself is living water that flows to all nations, and His followers have living water flowing out of them as well (John 7:38; Rev. 22:1-2).

14:20 | The messianic kingdom will not be like the world is today, with its division between sacred and secular. Everything will be sacred.

14:21 | Before Israel conquered the Promised Land, it was inhabited by the vile Canaanites. The promise that no longer will a Canaanite be in the house of the LORD is a euphemistic way of saying that the morally degenerate person will be excluded from entering the millennial temple (Ezek. 44:9).
