We Must Walk in the Light!
Series: He Loves Me He Loves Me Not | 1 John
Preface: Who Is John?
When Was 1 John Written?
That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life—2 the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us— 3 that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. 4 And we are writing these things so that our joy may be complete.

II. Being With Jesus Compels Us to
1 John 1:5-10
5 This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
v5 This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you
• Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
John 8:12
v5 God is Light
• In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
John 1:4-5
v6 If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie
• For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed.
John 3:20
v7 If we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another
• …for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light…
Ephesians 5:8
v8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us
• …for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God…
Romans 3:23
• Surely there is not a righteous man on earth who does good and never sins.
Ecclesiastes 7:20
v9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
• Of David.
The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
Psalm 27:1
v10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us
• Many a man proclaims his own steadfast love, but a faithful man who can find?
Proverbs 20:6
• For we have already charged that all, both Jews and Greeks, are under sin, 10 as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one;11no one understands; no one seeks for God.
12 All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.”13 “Their throat is an open grave; they use their tongues to deceive.” “The venom of asps is under their lips.”14“Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness.”15 “Their feet are swift to shed blood;16in their paths are ruin and misery,17and the way of peace they have not known.”18“There is no fear of God before their eyes.”
Romans 3:9b-18
