Message Notes

John 1:1-9
“1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. 8 He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light. 9 The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.”

1) Jesus is the True Light of the World.

Luke 2:29-32
“29 Lord, now I can die in peace! As you promised me, 30 I have seen the Savior 31 you have given to all people. 32 He is a light to reveal God to the nations, and he is the glory of your people Israel!”

Colossians 1:15
“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.”

Hebrews 1:3a
“He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power.”

2) Why Would God Send His True Light Into the World?

A) He knew we needed a true light to expose the spiritual darkness in our lives and lead us into spiritual life.

John 8:7
“Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.”

John 8:10-11
“10 Jesus stood up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” 11 She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.”

John 8:12
“Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.””

  • Darkness loves the darkness.

John 3:19
“This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil.”

  • Darkness has a fear of being exposed by the Light.

John 3:20
“For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed.”

  • Darkness does not overcome the light!

John 1:5
“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

1 John 1:5-6
“5 This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.”

1 John 1:9
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive all of our sins and cleanse us from all of unrighteousness.”

John 12:46
“I have come as a light to shine in this dark world, so that all who put their trust in me will no longer remain in the darkness.”

B) He knew we would need a true light to guide us throughout our lives.

Psalm 119:105
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

  • Caution: Darkness likes to disguise itself as light.

C) He knew we would need a true light to protect us.

Psalm 27:1
“The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?”

D) He knew we would need a true light to give us hope for the future.

Isaiah 9:2, 7
“2 The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone. 7 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.”

3) How Should We Respond to This True Light, Jesus?

2 Corinthians 3:18
“And all of us have had that veil removed so that we can be mirrors that brightly reflect the glory of the Lord. And as the Spirit of the Lord works within us, we become more and more like him and reflect his glory even more.”

  • Answer – Our lives should reflect this true light into a dark world.

Matthew 5:16
“In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.”
