Control vs. Surrender

1. What you try to control the most is often where you are trusting God the least.

Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” —Matthew 26:36 NIV

He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.” —Matthew 26:37-38 NIV

Note what Jesus said, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death.”

“And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.” —Luke 22:44 NIV

Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.” —Matthew 26:39 NIV

Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me for one hour?” he asked Peter. —Matthew 26:40 NIV

Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak!” 42 Then Jesus left them a second time and prayed, “My Father! If this cup cannot be taken away unless I drink it, your will be done.” —Matthew 26:41-42 NIV

1. What you try to control the most is often where you are trusting God the least.
2. You don’t always have the power to control, but you always have the power to surrender.

What would you rather have, God’s will or your will?

A. Should I make this a big deal?
B. Do I have control over this?
C. Is this solely for God?

Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. 6 Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take. —Proverb 3:5–6 NLT

Don’t you realize that I could ask my Father for thousands of angels to protect us, and he would send them instantly? 54 But if I did, how would the Scriptures be fulfilled that describe what must happen now?” —Matthew 26: 53-54 NLT

If you cling to your life, you will lose it; but if you give up your life for me, you will find it. —Matthew 10:39 NLT
