Takeaways …

  • When God brings people into blessing, it isn’t just for them, but for His mission through them.

  • What God desires to give must still be taken.

Joshua 1:2-3 (Page 89 The Story)
“Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan River into the land I am about to give them – to the Israelites. I will give you every place where you set your foot … .”

For most every promise that God makes in Scripture, there is a premise!

Philippians 4:7 (NIV)
And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV)
Do not be anxious about anything (here’s the premise), but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. (here’s the promise) And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

Joshua 1:6 (NIV)
“Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land … .”

  • The taking will involve some warfare.

Deuteronomy 9:4-5 (NIV)
After the Lord your God has driven them out before you, do not say to yourself, “The Lord has brought me here to take possession of this land because of my righteousness.” No, it is on account of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord is going to drive them out before you. It is not because of your righteousness or your integrity that you are going in to take possession of the land; but on account of the wickedness of these nations, the Lord your God will drive them out before you … .

Deuteronomy 18:9-11 (NIV)
When you enter the land the Lord God is giving you, do not learn to imitate the detestable ways of the nations there. Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead.

Genesis 15:13-14, 16 (NIV)
“Know for certain that for four hundred years your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own and that they will be enslaved and mistreated there. But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves, and afterward they will come out with great possessions.”

(Verse 16) “… your descendants will come back here, for the sin of the Amorites has not yet reached its full measure.”

  • We must be wary of criticizing the judgment of God when it is poured out, without considering how long the patience of God has stretched out.

Joshua 2:8-11 (Page 90-91 The Story)
Before the spies lay down for the night, she went up on the roof and said to them, “I know that the Lord has given this land to you and that a great fear has fallen on us, so that all who live in this country are melting in fear because of you.

“We have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea for you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to Sihon and Og, the two kings of the Amorites east of the Jordan, whom you completely destroyed.

“When we heard of it, our hearts melted in fear and everyone’s courage failed because of you, for the Lord your God is God in heaven above and on earth below.”

Joshua 2:9 (NIV)
“I know that the Lord has given this land to you … . ”
