Message Notes:
My choices determine the outcome of my life.
Psalms 1 is a Psalm of choice between two paths with two very different outcomes.
**Psalms 1
Blessed is the person who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked,
Nor stand in the path of sinners,
Nor sit in the seat of scoffers!
2
But his delight is in the Law of the Lord,
And on His Law he meditates day and night.
3
He will be like a tree planted by streams of water,
Which yields its fruit in its season,
And its leaf does not wither;
And in whatever he does, he prospers.
4
The wicked are not so,
But they are like chaff which the wind blows away.
5
Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
Nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.
6
For the Lord knows the way of the righteous,
But the way of the wicked will perish.**
Two paths and Two metaphors
Psalms 1 assumes you know 2 things already that are so important to its path:
1. Walking on this righteous path is the original intent of humanity.
- Genesis 1:26-28 NASB Then God said, “Let Us make mankind in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the livestock and over all the earth, and over every crawling thing that crawls on the earth.” 27 So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 28 God blessed them; and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
To be human is to be capable of greatness.
**vs 3 He will be like a tree planted by streams of water,
Which yields its fruit in its season,
And its leaf does not wither;
And in whatever he does, he prospers.
*
2. Without God our natural orientation is to the wicked path.
Sin distorts our humanity.
1 Corinthians 15:49 NASB “the image of the earthy”
Sin distorts the outcome of our creation now because it is rooted in our selfishness.
My choices determine the outcome of my life.
Jesus talks about choosing between paths.
Matthew 7:13-14 NASB 13 “Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. 14 For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it.
*
*Choosing God results in a transformed heart and a visible path forward.
God’s spirit restores our broken hearts.
* vs 3
He will be like a tree planted by streams of water,
Which yields its fruit in its season,
And its leaf does not wither;
And in whatever he does, he prospers.
*
My choices determine the outcome of my life.
