Growth Questions
These questions are to help you apply each week’s message to your life and to help others do the same. Can being honest and vulnerable about your life be intimidating? Is it OK to struggle and have real questions? The answer to both questions is “Yes.” Growth Groups are meant to be safe places where we share our answers to the questions below in order to help people know, love & serve Jesus better, together. If you’re not in one, email Pastor David Mataya (david@redeemeraz.org), and ask about availability. If you missed this or any message, you can go to our website, iTunes, Spotify, Facebook page, or our YouTube channel to get caught up.
How should the fact that the Anti-Christ is restrained until his appointed time be encouraging to you (2 Thess 2:6; cf. Job 42:2; Ecclesiastes 3:11)? How do you see the “mystery of lawlessness at work” in the world today (vs. 7)? What might this indicate about how things will be when lawlessness is no longer restrained (cf. Matthew 24:37-39; Genesis 6:5-8)?
How does verse 8 provide understanding as to Paul’s admonitions to the Thessalonian believers in verses 1-5? How should we respond to “spirits, spoken words, a counterfeit letter”…and/or a YouTube video, a bestseller, a podcast, and/or a website that tries to unlock Bible prophecy before it happens and thus, elicits fear, panic, and/or doom?
Why is it helpful to understand who is behind the Anti-Christ (vs. 9-10a)? Even though the Anti-Christ has yet to be revealed, how does the Apostle John, in 1 John 2:18-25, help us to be discerning regarding the times we are currently living in?
What Paul reveals in verse 11 can be troubling for some – but how does verse 10 and verse 12 help us understand the condemnation of those who are deceived by the Man of Lawlessness? How might God’s dealing with Pharaoh in Exodus 4:21, 7:3, 8:15, 9:12, 10:21 and God’s judgement of the debased in Romans 1:24-28 also help us understand verse 11?
What are some ways that 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12 encourages you considering the dark circumstances that precede the Second Coming of Christ?
- Bonus: How does verse 11 help us understand the difference between true belief and “demon-level” belief in James 2:19?
