FLOOD
The flood occurs because of the far reaching effects of the fall.
Genesis 6:11–13 ESV
Now the earth was corrupt in God’s sight, and the earth was filled with violence.
And God saw the earth, and behold, it was corrupt, for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth.
And God said to Noah, “I have determined to make an end of all flesh, for the earth is filled with violence through them. Behold, I will destroy them with the earth.
God’s judgments are just because on he truly knows the heart of man.
1 Peter 3:20 ESV
because they formerly did not obey, when God’s patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water.
To what does this “patience” refer which “waited” while the ark was a preparing! How long had God’s patience been exercised, Nine hundred and sixty-nine years seems to be the answer—the span of Methuselah’s life. As long as Enoch’s son lived the world was safe; but when he died, then should the flood be sent. Is it not a most impressive demonstration of God’s “patience” that the man whose life was to measure the breath of a world’s probation, was permitted to live longer than any one else ever did live! Nine hundred and sixty-nine years—what an exhibition of God’s mercy!
THEY HAD THE TESTIMONY OF …
Romans 1:19–20 ESV
For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them.
For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.
CONSCIENCE
Romans 2:14–15 ESV
For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law.
They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them
Genesis 4:15 ESV
Then the LORD said to him, “Not so! If anyone kills Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold.” And the LORD put a mark on Cain, lest any who found him should attack him.
CRIERS
Jude 14–15 ESV
It was also about these that Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied, saying, “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of his holy ones,
to execute judgment on all and to convict all the ungodly of all their deeds of ungodliness that they have committed in such an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things that ungodly sinners have spoken against him.”
2 Peter 2:5 ESV
if he did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a herald of righteousness, with seven others, when he brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly;

Genesis 5:5 ESV
Thus all the days that Adam lived were 930 years, and he died.
Genesis 5:21 ESV
When Enoch had lived 65 years, he fathered Methuselah.
Genesis 5:25–26 ESV
When Methuselah had lived 187 years, he fathered Lamech.
Methuselah lived after he fathered Lamech 782 years and had other sons and daughters.

THE HOLY SPIRIT
Genesis 6:2 ESV
the sons of God saw that the daughters of man were attractive. And they took as their wives any they chose.
BY GRACE
Genesis 6:8 NKJV
But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.
This verse is best understood in reverse.
GRACE FOUND NOAH.
THROUGH FAITH
Hebrews 11:7 ESV
By faith Noah, being warned by God concerning events as yet unseen, in reverent fear constructed an ark for the saving of his household. By this he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.
Genesis 6:22 ESV
Noah did this; he did all that God commanded him.
James 2:20 NKJV
But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead?
Genesis 7:1 ESV
Then the LORD said to Noah, “Go into the ark, you and all your household, for I have seen that you are righteous before me in this generation.
OUT
SIN OF
NOAH
1 Corinthians 10:6 ESV
Now these things took place as examples for us, that we might not desire evil as they did.
THE SIN OF NOAH INSTRUCTS US NOT TO …
The drunkenness of Noah is recorded in the Bible as a reminder of human weakness and imperfection, and to show that the best of men cannot stand upright, unless they depend upon Divine grace, and are upheld thereby. It was said of Noah, that he was perfect in his generations (Genesis 6:9); but this is meant of sincerity, not of a sinless perfection. Noah, who had kept sober in drunken company, is now drunk in sober company.
1 Corinthians 10:12 ESV
Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall.
Let him that thinks he stands, take heed lest he fall. We have need to be very careful how we use God’s good gifts, lest we use them to excess. (Matthew Henry - The consequence of Noah’s sin was shame. Observe here the great evil of the sin of drunkenness. It discovers men; what infirmities they have, they betray when they are drunk; and secrets are then easily got out of them. It disgraces men, and exposes them to contempt. As it shows them, so it shames them. Men say and do that when drunken, which, when sober, they would blush to think of.
BE OVERCOME BY SIN.
Romans 6:12–14 ESV
Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions.
Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness.
For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.

THE SIN OF NOAH INSTRUCTS US NOT TO …
OVERLOOK SIN BUT COVER IT.
Love doesn’t cleanse sin, for only the blood of Christ can do that (1 John 1:7); nor does love condone sin, for love wants God’s very best for others. But love does cover sin and doesn’t go around exposing sin and encouraging others to spread the bad news. When people sin and we know about it, our task is to help restore them in a spirit of meekness
Galatians 6:1–2 ESV
Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.
It’s been said that on the battlefield of life, Christians are prone to kick their wounded; and too often this is true. But before we condemn others, we’d better consider ourselves, for all of us are candidates for conduct unbecoming to a Christian.
Notice the care of Shem and Japheth to cover their father’s shame. There is a mantle of love to be thrown over the faults of all,
1 Peter 4:8 ESV
Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins.
thrown over the faults of parents and other superiors. The blessing of God attends on those who honour their parents, and his curse lights especially on those who dishonour them.
SCATTERED
Genesis 11:1–5 ESV
Now the whole earth had one language and the same words. And as people migrated from the east, they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there. And they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks, and burn them thoroughly.” And they had brick for stone, and bitumen for mortar. Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be dispersed over the face of the whole earth.” And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of man had built.
Genesis 9:1 ESV
And God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.
GOD DETERMINES THE PLACEMENT OF NATIONS.
Acts 17:26 ESV
And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place,

Acts 17:27 ESV
that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us,
Psalm 86:9 ESV
All the nations you have made shall come and worship before you, O Lord, and shall glorify your name.
Psalm 96:3 ESV
Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples!
GOD HAS A
Revelation 5:9 ESV
And they sang a new song, saying, “Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation,
GOD REMEMBERS
Genesis 8:1 ESV
But God remembered Noah and all the beasts and all the livestock that were with him in the ark. And God made a wind blow over the earth, and the waters subsided.
REMEMBERS IS A TERM OF FAITHFULNESS NOT FORGETFULNESS.
To remember means to act on behalf of another. We can be sure that God never forgets or forsakes His people, not only because of His promises,3 but also because of His character. God is love, and where there’s love, there’s faithfulness. He can never deny Himself or His Word, for He’s the faithful God; and He can never change, because He’s immutable. Because He’s perfect, God can’t change for the better; and because He’s holy, He can’t change for the worse. We can depend on Him no matter what our circumstances or no matter how we feel.
GOD REWARDS FAITH
Hebrews 11:6 ESV
And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
Mark 10:29–30 ESV
Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands, for my sake and for the gospel, who will not receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and in the age to come eternal life.
GOD RECEIVES WORSHIP
Genesis 8:20 ESV
Then Noah built an altar to the LORD and took some of every clean animal and some of every clean bird and offered burnt offerings on the altar.
SINCE GOD IN FAITHFULNESS REMEMBERS US, WE BY FAITH MUST REMEMBER GOD.
GOD RETAINS A REMNANT
Genesis 3:15 ESV
I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”
The lineage of Shem as recorded Genesis 11:10-26 testifies to God faithfulness. He secures first Adams line in order to save through the second Adam.
Romans 5:17–19 ESV
For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ. Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous.
