Doing As Jesus Did
Message Notes
Goal #3 – Do as Jesus Did
Acts 1:1
“In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach”
1 John 2:6
“Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.”
Titus 1:16a
“They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him.”
“Go make Disciples”
Jesus had 3 Gospel Rhythms
What is the gospel?
Rhythm #1 – Making Space for the Gospel
Luke 19:1-10
“Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short he could not see over the crowd. 4 So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way. When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.” So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly. All the people saw this and began to mutter, “He has gone to be the guest of a sinner.” But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.” Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”
“Hospitality” = Philoxenia
A compound word:
- philo means “love”
- xenos means “stranger, foreigner, or guest”
Hospitality is the “love of the stranger”
Rhythm #2 – Sharing the Gospel
Acts 1:8
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
Romans 10:14-15
“How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!””
To be a witness
means to tell others what you saw or experienced.
We’re witnesses, not salespeople.
Rhythm #3 – Demonstrating the Gospel
Luke 4:18-21
“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. He began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”
