Why do people get stuck?
I Timothy 4:6-16
Road Trip 01 | Luke Morgan | discipleship pastor | first aired on 06.09.19
If you point these things out to the brothers and sisters, you will be a good minister of Christ Jesus, nourished on the truths of the faith and of the good teaching that you have followed. Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come. This is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance. That is why we labor and strive, because we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all people, and especially of those who believe.
Command and teach these things. Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity. Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching. Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through prophecy when the body of elders laid their hands on you.
Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress. Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers. —1 Timothy 4:6-16 (NIV)
As I urged you when I went into Macedonia, stay there in Ephesus so that you may command certain people not to teach false doctrines any longer or to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies. Such things promote controversial speculations rather than advancing God’s work—which is by faith. The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. Some have departed from these and have turned to meaningless talk. —1 Timothy 1:3-6
(NIV)
I. Why do people get
A. False teaching
If you point these things out to the brothers and sisters, you will be a good minister of Christ Jesus, nourished on the truths of the faith and of the good teaching that you have followed. Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. (6-7) —1 Timothy 4:6-7 (NIV)
B. Focusing on the wrong things
For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come. —1 Timothy 4:8
Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through prophecy when the body of elders laid their hands on you.Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress. Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers. —1 Timothy 4:14-16 (NIV)

II. What
That is why we labor and strive, because we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all people, and especially of those who believe.

Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through prophecy when the body of elders laid their hands on you. —1 Timothy 4:10-14 (NIV)
III. How do people get
I am using an example from everyday life because of your human limitations. Just as you used to offer yourselves as slaves to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer yourselves as slaves to righteousness leading to holiness. When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness. What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death! But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. —Romans 6:19-23 (NIV)
God intended for me
to see him face to face
but I messed it up
I have sinned
I have loved the world
I have believed false teaching
and focused on the wrong things
but God so loved the world
that he gave his only son
who died in my place.
the Father,
sees me through his Son.
The Father,
has bought me back.
I believe in Jesus’ death and resurrection.
I ask for the Spirit. —Luke Morgan

Note on this series:
We encourage you to purchase the book Grown-Up Faith by Kevin Myers and read through it as you track with the summer message series. Messages will still be meaningful if you don’t read the book but it will help you take a deeper dive into biblical responses for big questions of the faith.
