Your Heart Is In His Heart - Message Study Questions

Message Summary

The Psalms have a wonderful capacity to capture the reality of our human experience. They express the emotions, personal feelings, attitudes, gratitude, and interests of each of us. In the Psalms, we get to know God on a deep and personal level. Psalm 1 introduces the Psalms, presenting two ways of life: the way of the righteous and the way of the wicked. The key subject of this Psalm is the centrality of God’s Word to the life and fruitfulness of the righteous who love His Word. Whatever we allow to shape our thinking shapes our lives. Life advice should not come from the current culture. It needs to come from the Bible. A God-honoring faith-filled life is centered around the Word of God and the application of it to one’s life. The result is a blessed life here and now, and eternal life to come.

  2. What are some ways that your life is different from unbelievers in your sphere of influence?

Consider This

When you study God’s Word, apply it and see God fulfill His promises in your life, it’s addicting. God isn’t some distant, unknowable force. He is close, and when you have the Holy Spirit in you and pay attention to what God is doing; He is always at work in and around you.

  1. In Psalm 1:1, from what three things should believers refrain? What do these mean to you today?

  2. Why is spending time with other believers important to the way you think?

    • What does meditating on God’s word mean to you?

  4. Today in your world, how does the law of the Lord differ from the counsel of the wicked?

  5. Knowing the Bible is one thing, applying it is another. You apply God’s Word to your life by knowing it and doing it. Is God’s word the highest authority in your life?

  6. Consider Psalm 1:3. Does the blessed person always bear fruit? What is the condition of his/her spiritual health in season and out? Will he/she prosper regardless of circumstances? How?

    • What kind of fruit should we yield? (see Galatians 5:22-23)

    • What do you think “leaves never withering,” and the “tree always prospering,” means?

  7. Do you believe you will be blessed if you obey God this week? How in the short term, long term, eternally? Which is more motivating to you?

  8. List all the ways that the righteous and the wicked are different in verses 1-6.

  9. The way of doom. What is missing in the lives of the wicked in verses 4-5?

  10. What do you think it means to perish versus being known by God (see John 3:16 for a NT explanation)?.
