1. Read Mark 5:1-5

a. Look up the region of the “Gadarenes.” What is significant about this area?

b. What do we learn about the man who immediately came up to Jesus? What about this man’s state would have been troublesome for a “good” Jew?

2. Read Mark 5:6-10

a. Discuss the details of how this man came and “worshipped” Jesus. How is this possible, given him having an unclean spirit(s)?

b. What torment are these demons concerned about?

c. Why would Jesus ask to know the name of the unclean spirit?

3. Read Mark 5:11-17

a. What do we learn about the number of demons present in this passage?

b. Why would the demons drown the pigs instead of running in a different direction?

c. Why would those who fed the pigs flee? Why return with people from the country and city to ask Jesus to depart from the region?

4. Read Mark 5:18-20

a. Why would Jesus not let the man He freed from this mob of demons come with Him?

b. What is significant about Jesus sending this theologically uneducated man into the surrounding region to proclaim what Jesus had done for Him? What gave Him the ability and right to go?
