Overview: Benediction & Farewell (Hebrews 13:20-25)
The author of Hebrews has spent a great deal of time teaching, guiding, challenging, and equipping his audience. He has had many things to write to these Jewish Christians who were being persecuted. The passage emphasizes the eternal relationship between God and his people, which was secured by the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ. Hebrews 13:20-25 is a benediction, “an utterance or bestowing of a blessing”. The author is giving a blessing to his audience as part of his conclusion.
The amazing thing about God’s Word is that the statements in the benediction apply not only to the original audience but to believers today because the truths found in it still ring true. God is a God of peace. God raised Jesus from the dead. He will equip every believer for doing His will forever. God works in the lives of believers to help them please Him.
