Sermon: The Sovereign, Sacrificial, Shepherd
Scripture: John 18:1-14
Summary: Chapter 18 begins the passion of the Christ in John’s gospel. It starts in Gethsemane but John shows us a different side of Christ than the synoptics. Jesus is in control the whole time, and no one takes his life from him. Rather he lays is down for the sheep so that none may be lost.
For Reflection and Discussion
Read Scripture: John 18:1-14
- What’s one thing you learned from the sermon? What stood out?
- Read John 8:48-59 – compare and contrast Jesus claim, the audiences reaction and
Jesus’s response after with what happens in John 18. - What something you thought you needed only to find out later that you really didn’t?
- In John 18 we see Jesus as a Sovereign, Sacrificial, Shepherd. Which of the 3 words
resonate best with you when you think of Jesus? - Peter said that we all need a sovereign. Someone who knows the beginning from the end. Left to our own knowledge and wisdom we can get into trouble. What’s a time where you went your own way instead of following Jesus and it didn’t turn out well for you?
- As Easter draws closer and we teach toward it. What’s your thoughts about it this year? Have you thought about it at all? Has familiarity bred contempt? What’s one way you can prepare you heart for Easter this year?
- What’s an area of your life that you need to surrender to Jesus?
