The Christian Work Ethic

“10 …If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat. 11 For we hear that some among you walk in idleness, not busy at work, but busybodies. 12 Now such persons we command and encourage in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work quietly and to earn their own living.” —2 Thessalonians 3:10b–12

Allegiance to King Jesus produces outcomes in EVERY aspect of life

“28 Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need.” —Ephesians 4:28

Jesus Christ calls you to work for Him so you can be a BLESSING rather than a BURDEN

“22 Bondservants, obey in everything those who are your earthly masters, not by way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord. 23 Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, 24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.” —Colossians 3:22–24

If you have historically needed to be micromanaged and driven with a whip or incentivized with a carrot, it’s time abandon your childish ways and work like a citizen of Heaven

“6 Go to the ant, O sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise. 7 Without having any chief, officer, or ruler, 8 she prepares her bread in summer and gathers her food in harvest. 9 How long will you lie there, O sluggard? When will you arise from your sleep? 10 A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, 11 and poverty will come upon you like a robber, and want like an armed man.” —Proverbs 6:6–11

If you don’t like your job, your income, or your impact, self-govern to change it.

  • With your free time Are you watching TV, playing video games, or consuming social media instead of gaining a valuable skill, talent, knowledge, education, or certification?

“4 A slack hand causes poverty, but the hand of the diligent makes rich.” —Proverbs 10:4

  • With your commute, chores, or gym time, are you listening to music/fiction/newstalk/sportstalk radio, or are you listening to audiobooks, lectures, and podcasts that teach valuable skills, habits, or thinking?

“29 Do you see a man skillful in his work? He will stand before kings; he will not stand before obscure men.” —Proverbs 22:29

What does the way you handle your current responsibilities (running a company, teaching students, building a household, etc.) say about the way you would handle greater responsibilities?

“10 One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much, and one who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much. 11 If then you have not been faithful in the unrighteous wealth, who will entrust to you the true riches? 12 And if you have not been faithful in that which is another’s, who will give you that which is your own? 13 No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.” —Luke 16:10–13
