Discussion Questions - Luke 6:1-11

  1. Why does God give commandments?
  2. Why did God command His people to remember the Sabbath and keep it holy? (cf. Ex. 20:8-11)
  3. The Pharisees had good intentions, but got so carried away that they were trying to do the right things in the wrong ways. What might this look like among Christians today?
  4. How did the Pharisees even know that Jesus’ disciples had eaten some grain?
  5. Is what the disciples were doing illegal? Were they stealing? (cf. Deut. 23:24-25; Lev. 23:22)
  6. What is it that the Pharisees took issue with?
  7. Jesus brought up a story from the life of David to counter the Pharisees. (cf. 1 Sam. 21:1-6) What was His point in bringing this event up?
  8. Jesus could have avoided the controversy in the synagogue altogether by simply waiting until the next day to heal the man’s hand. Why do you think He didn’t wait?
  9. Although this story is about the Sabbath, it reveals a more foundational difference between Jesus and the Pharisees. How would you describe the biggest differences between Jesus and the Pharisees’ teaching and work?
  10. We all can be guilty of it, but in which areas of your life have you acted like a Pharisee before? In what ways do you need to become more like Christ in these stories?
