Isaiah 26:9
“I look for you during the night, my spirit within me seeks you at dawn, for when your judgments come upon the earth, those who live in the world learn about justice.” (NET 2nd ed.)
2 Timothy 3:12–13
“In fact, all who want to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted. Evil people and impostors will become worse, deceiving and being deceived.” (CSB)
Last time we were together, we began our discussion of the three woes pronounced after the 4th Trumpet Judgment. We have looked at the first woe, the 5th Trumpet Judgment.
The basic idea was a mix of demons and fallen angels who would terrorize earth dwellers for 5 months.
The earth dwellers would like to die due to the severity, but they can’t. We also talked about the physical appearance of these demons which was not an unusual one as far as John’s readers would have thought.
We look at the bug like demonic creatures and some of us still are struggling to buy it.
Let me add in one more thing before we move on, from the world of alien abductions, also known by those doing ministry for those caught up in this, as classic demon possession.
One group of those who find themselves being abducted, state that “at the onset of their abductions, feel fear and sometimes terror regarding their experiences. They know that what is happening to them is not at all normal, and the sight of little gray beings with large black almond-shaped eyes, or reptilian beings, or insectoid-looking creatures frighten them. But as has been the case with so many abductions, they are told not to worry; not to fear because they have a purpose, a job to complete in the great cosmic evolution that is soon coming upon the Earth.” (Ruffino and Jordan 2010, Kindle Location 466)
If we look at survey and remain conservative, there are over 6 million in this country who would say they have been abducted.
Through the research into the case testimonies, it was found that some of the experiencers were able to stop or terminate the experience. There was a recognized commonality in the method that was used among the Christian experiencers. The experience was shown to be able to be stopped or terminated by calling on the name and authority of JESUS CHRIST. Not as a magic word but by their allegiance to and personal relationship with Him. (CE4 Research Group 2013)
I do find it curious that when the insectoid demons are described, it reads as if John wrote it here in Revelation.
With that, the earth dwellers, those who have rejected Jesus Christ up to this point in the Tribulation, are starting to learn, just as Isaiah said they would, the justice of God.
We are about to discover a serious application of that justice right here in the 6th Trumpet Judgement.
Let’s look at our text. Oh, warning, this too is serious weird. We will see that the intensity of judgment continues to spiral upwards into severity.
Revelation 9:13–19
“Then the sixth angel sounded, and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God, saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates.” And the four angels, who had been prepared for the hour and day and month and year, were released, so that they would kill a third of mankind. The number of the armies of the horsemen was two hundred million; I heard the number of them. And this is how I saw in my vision the horses and those who sat on them: the riders had breastplates the color of fire, of hyacinth, and of brimstone; and the heads of the horses are like the heads of lions; and out of their mouths came fire and smoke and brimstone. A third of mankind was killed by these three plagues, by the fire, the smoke, and the brimstone which came out of their mouths. For the power of the horses is in their mouths and in their tails; for their tails are like serpents and have heads, and with them they do harm.” (NASB 2020)
The sixth angel sounds his horn and unlike all the previous musical performances we have looked at so far, this one, the angel who plays the horn becomes a participant in what is taking place.
John reports to us that has the blast of this 6th horn begins to fade, he hears a voice come from golden altar before God.
When first we saw the altar before God, it was because of the 5th seal being opened on the deed to planet earth.
Revelation 6:9–10
“When the Lamb broke the fifth seal, I saw underneath the altar the souls of those who had been killed because of the word of God, and because of the testimony which they had maintained; and they cried out with a loud voice, saying, “How long, O Lord, holy and true, will You refrain from judging and avenging our blood on those who live on the earth?”” (NASB 2020)
Just prior to the beginning of the Trumpet judgements, we see it again.
Revelation 8:3–5
“Another angel came and stood at the altar, holding a golden censer; and much incense was given to him, so that he might add it to the prayers of all the saints on the golden altar which was before the throne. And the smoke of the incense ascended from the angel’s hand with the prayers of the saints before God. Then the angel took the censer and filled it with the fire of the altar, and hurled it to the earth; and there were peals of thunder and sounds, and flashes of lightning and an earthquake.” (NASB 2020)
The first time we encountered the altar before God, underneath it were the souls of those who were being martyred for the name of Jesus post pre-tribulation rapture of the church. We covered that and we also talked about the basic prayer request of those being murdered, “how long before avenging their blood on the earth dwellers?”
They were told not until the number who were to be killed had been obtained.
Then we saw the altar again as an angel added prayers to those already there from the martyrs, then the angel took some of the fire from the altar and threw it to earth as a preview of things to come.
Now we encounter the altar again and John hears a voice come from it. There are multiple views as to who the voice is. Some say it is Christ and it might indeed be. But this voice comes from the four horns of the altar, and I believe it is pointing back to the original prayer request of those martyred whose prayer was later added to.
The voice is the voice of all of those prayers crying out for vengeance.
The call itself is the common voice of all four of the horns of the altar, indicating the energy and the universality of the demand for vengeance, and of that vengeance itself. The call from the altar also reflects the character of a particular apostasy for which this invitation is sent. When there is a voice invocative of judgment, the locality of it expresses where the sin has been which is to be avenged. (Seiss 1901, 109)
John has reminded us several times of the importance of prayer.
Judgement is being pronounced from the altar. We already know that God has added to the prayers of the Tribulation saints, now He takes action allowing the voice of those prayers to be heard.
By the way, we will hear from the altar again later (Revelation 16:7)
The “voice” provides a command to release four angels who are bound at the Euphrates River. Where, along the river are they currently being held, we do not know.
The inference is that this judgment like those preceding is partially an answer to the prayers of the persecuted saints on earth and a token of divine response and preparation for their deliverance. (Walvoord 2008, 164)
One would think that after all the seal judgements, as well as the first five trumpet judgements, that there would be a massive worldwide revival taking place and millions coming to Christ, but sadly, that is not the case.
The hearts of all of those recently tortured by demons just grow harder and harder. Why should we be surprised? This has been demonstrated to us before. For example, after enduring all but the final plague, where was the heart of Pharoah? In rebellion.
Exodus 10:27–29
“But the LORD hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he was unwilling to let them go. Pharaoh said to him, “Leave me! Make sure you never see my face again, for on the day you see my face, you will die.” “As you have said,” Moses replied, “I will never see your face again.”” (CSB)
This attitude showed up again as Joshua began his combat operations in the land.
Joshua 11:20
“For it was the LORD’s intention to harden their hearts, so that they would engage Israel in battle, be completely destroyed without mercy, and be annihilated, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.” (CSB)
Sin is just like this, it is deceptive, it looks attractive, the first few times you engage in a sin it may possibly deliver everything that you thought it would, you think you are in control, but, someone else is, and he has a totally different plan for your life than the Lord has.
Most of the time, you make that decision to engage in the sin you were tempted to do, and almost immediately, condemnation hits you from the enemy.
It sounds much like this, “So you call yourself a Christian. How could a Christian even think about much less do what you just did. God will never want you back.” Sound familiar.
C.S. Lewis wrote a short little book about our need to grow in Christ and how the enemy goes about trying to keep us defeated. He sets it up as a series of letters from a junior demon to a more senior one, The Screwtape Letters. In one section, there is discussion about just how Screwtape wants his protégé, Wormwood, to go about drawing a believer away from the Lord.
“You will say that these are very small sins; and doubtless, like all young tempters, you are anxious to be able to report spectacular wickedness. But do remember, the only thing that matters is the extent to which you separate the man from the Enemy. It does not matter how small the sins are provided that their cumulative effect is to edge the man away from the Light and out into the Nothing. Murder is no better than cards if cards can do the trick. Indeed the safest road to Hell is the gradual one—the gentle slope, soft underfoot, without sudden turnings, without milestones, without signposts.” (Lewsi 2021, 60)
For us as believers, Jesus has done everything possible to keep us from falling to the wiles of the devil. We have the armor of God to put on and keep on. The enemy wants to destroy our witness, but when we pick up on the drift, we simply turn to 1 John 1:9. We can repent and return to relationship.
1 John 1:9
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (ESV)
Romans 7:25–8:4
“Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, with my mind I myself am serving the law of God, but with my flesh, the law of sin. Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus, because the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do since it was weakened by the flesh, God did. He condemned sin in the flesh by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh as a sin offering, in order that the law’s requirement would be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.” (CSB)
We may look at those who are still rejecting Christ after the 5th Trumpet Judgement and suffering the torture from demons and fallen angels for five months, as ripe for salvation. But not all will respond. And there is still the matter of retribution and vengeance on those who had been all about murdering His people, Tribulation saints and the Jews. Looking at the Biblical record, we do indeed get it.
Remember, Judas Iscariot walked with Jesus for 3 years and heard everything He said and saw the miracles, yet he never believed, and, in the end, he was a traitor who gave Jesus over to be crucified.
So, the four angels, yes, they are indeed fallen, are released from the Euphrates. They may already have a background there with prior civilizations they led astray in the past. But we know this, they have been held here specifically for this time and reason; God knows their hearts just as he knows ours.
They all are prepared for their hour of activity much as the whale was prepared to swallow Jonah and effect divine discipline upon the prophet. These are wicked angels designated to execute the great judgment of the sixth trumpet but prevented from doing so until the proper moment. (Walvoord 2008, 165)
One more thing about the Euphrates, here in “Rev 9:14, the river is the boundary between the world of the living and the realm of the dead: four death-dealing angels were kept in check on the Euphrates.” (van der Toorn 1999, 315-316) We will come back to this river before we are done in this book.
These four angels have a mission, it is death. Before, authorization had been given for supernaturally torturing the earth dwellers but not allowing any to die. Now the permissions change in response to the prayer request of those martyrs earlier.
Revelation 9:15–16
“And the four angels, who had been prepared for the hour and day and month and year, were released, so that they would kill a third of mankind. The number of the armies of the horsemen was two hundred million; I heard the number of them.” (NASB 2020)
If you ever wonder how murderous the fallen members of the unseen realm are, here we find out. When Jesus pointed out who the religious leadership of the Temple were truly following, He made a comment that some struggle with. But here, we see the truth in His statement.
John 8:44
“For you are the children of your father the devil, and you love to do the evil things he does. He was a murderer from the beginning. He has always hated the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies.” (NLT)
Did you pick up on the preparation and planning God has put into this moment? These four fallen angels being held prisoner have been placed there by God. They “had been prepared for the hour and day and month and year…”
There is no chance, no mistake, this is well planned out because not only is God sovereign, but He is also meticulous.
What a strange place for us to discover just how much God loves us and cares for us. He knows every detail of our lives down to time hacks. Nothing happens to us that is not Father filtered. God is truly in control.
Enoch 92:2
“Let not your spirit be troubled on account of the times; For the Holy and Great One has appointed days for all things.” (Charles and Oesterley 1917)
Do we live that way? We see here just how meticulous He is. These four were prepared for this hour, day, month and year. That is detailed. God is in all of it and as we look at this, He reminds us, that He is also in the details of our lives as well.
Romans 8:31–32
“What shall we say about such wonderful things as these? If God is for us, who can ever be against us? Since he did not spare even his own Son but gave him up for us all, won’t he also give us everything else?” (NLT)
God loves us, He loves those who prayed to Him earlier and He added to those prayers and here, He is answering them.
How many earth dwellers this time? We saw ¼ of the planet killed earlier and estimated that as well over 1 billion people total. Now, 1/3 of those who remain will die at the hands of this demonic army.
We began with a world population of around 7.6 billion people. After the rapture of the church and the removal of all those under the age of accountability, let’s be conservative and say 4 to 9 years of age, we arrive at a post pre-tribulation rapture planetary population of 5.6 to 6.3 billion people. The 4th seal accounts for the death of 1.4 billion.
Post 4th seal, 4.2 billion to 4.9 billion, or 53% of where we began, are still on earth.
Being conservative with numbers from the remaining seals as well as the first four trumpet judgements and let’s conjecture that at the beginning of the 6th seal, the world population consists of 3.5 to 4.2 billion people.
This trumpet judgement will account for another 1.4 billion dead, earth dwellers only (Rev 8:13,) reducing the world population, as we zip past the middle of the tribulation, to between 2.1 and 2.8 billion people, this is assuming 7.6 billion prior to the rapture taking place. This means that after this judgement, the planet population is around 28% of what it was just a few years earlier.
I have gone through these numbers, which are conservative conjectures, and will ask you the question I have asked others. How confident would you be of making it to the end of the Tribulation?
We are not done yet. Just as the land God gave Israel needed to have the squatters removed, which is what Joshua was all about getting done, here, God is also all about removing the squatters from the planet which He intends to dwell on, see Ezekiel 43, and return to Edenic conditions.
What we have seen so far is that from the rapture to this point, possibly around 5 years or so on the short end, 72% of the planet is gone.
As in the previous Woe, so also here, believers are to be spared (9:4, 20–21). The assault is directed against those who elsewhere are called “the inhabitants of the earth,” a standard designation of people in their hostility to God. (Mounce 1997, 194)
What we see is these four angels have, at their command, a massive army.
Revelation 9:16–19
“The number of the armies of the horsemen was two hundred million; I heard the number of them.
This huge army, heard by John to be 200 million, yes, that is indeed correct. He wants us to understand how overwhelming the size of this army is. And what John sees is not human cavalry, but instead one which is made up of what looks like, Chimeras. This is a creature that would be familiar to those living in the time of John.
What a contrast, the hosts of heaven, billions praising the Lord including the church. We have been provided a look at that future we all have. But here, for those who have rejected the Lord and survived to this point, we have hordes coming to devastate the earth even further.
The cavalry John sees are not human but have heads like lions and tails like snakes, and they snort out lethal fire, smoke, and sulfur. In Greco-Roman circles these monsters would have recalled stories about the fire-breathing Chimera, which had a lion’s head and a snake for a tail. (Koester 2014, 473)
Yes, this is a demonic army. Shades of Genesis 6, giants, and all the unusual happenings that went with it. Supernatural is now normal. This is a horror movie, a nightmare, that the earth dwellers cannot wake from.
The scene will be like one of the monster movies dreamed up by science fiction writers and Hollywood moguls, but it will be real. Eventually, perhaps, government and military leaders will become organized to combat these invaders and finally, after thirteen terrible months, will manage to destroy them. The jacinth-stone breastplates are essentially bullet-proof however, and it will take many powerful weapons to defeat them. Once the animals are dead, their carcasses will deface and pollute the landscape, and their demonic occupants will again be without bodies. (Morris 1983, 170)
Had real cavalries been described, swords and arrows would have been in their hands. But these are not war-men, but war-demons… (Whedon 1880, 399)
These are not the kings of the east. They are yet to come. These are demons. A third of the earth dwellers are killed by this demonic cavalry and they are killed by fire, smoke and sulfur (brimstone) which proceed out of the mouth of these creatures or machines. Each element on its own will kill and combined they account for a 1/3rd of the population of the earth at that time
John noted three ways that the demon horses killed their victims, all of which picture the violent, devastating fury of hell. They incinerated them with fire, and asphyxiated them with smoke and the gas given off by the heated brimstone. (MacArthur 2007, 167)
Surely, now those who are earth dwellers, those who have survived this demonic horde, would repent and come to the Lord, right? I think even John was anticipating that would be the case, which is why, for the first time, he provides us a report of all of this on the survivors.
Revelation 9:20–21
“The rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands so as not to worship demons and the idols of gold, silver, brass, stone, and wood, which can neither see nor hear nor walk; and they did not repent of their murders, nor of their witchcraft, nor of their sexual immorality, nor of their thefts.” (NASB 2020)
One in three of everyone living on the earth currently is gone because of this demonic horde. And yet, unbelief remains. Some would indeed be saved, but no large numbers are reported. Crickets appears to be the result.
Is it possible that the nations, working together figured out a way to kill these creatures? Possible. If that were the case, then it would follow no repentance since “we did this” and saved the planet from the alien invasion.
Those who have not come to the Lord by this time, are most likely hardened and firmly unrepentant to the point that God will no longer be talking to them. John tells us that instead, he sees the worship of demons continuing. Idolatry has become a real thing again. But one thing is clear, they can no longer deny the existence of a supernatural world. They just fought it.
The object of this woe is partly retributive and partly reformatory. It belongs to the judicial administrations of the great day. It is God’s terrific judgment upon the world, which has disowned allegiance to Him, and rejected the mediation of His Son. It is the righteous indignation of outraged justice which can no longer endure the superlative wickednesses of men. (Seiss 1901, 120)
We are given, by John, a list of the sins that those who survived, and refused to repent, indulge in. Beyond demon worship and idolatry, we see four other items referenced which are also the current big four of our generation.
Murder – φόνων (phonōn) which means ”murder, particularly slaughter, slaying or killing by the sword.” (Zodhiates 2000)
We see a type of slaughter globally now that most cultures accept.
We are talking about abortion. As with all sin, Jesus died on the cross to provide forgiveness for us. All we must do is say yes to His offer of salvation. But many continue to reject that today and will continue to do so in the future, as we see here.
Don’t allow the culture to confuse you, the Bible does indeed speak about abortion. First of all, there is the practice of child sacrifice that was all the rage and wound up being picked up as a practice by both the northern and the southern kingdom.
Jeremiah 32:35
“They built the high places of Baal in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, to offer up their sons and daughters to Molech, though I did not command them, nor did it enter into my mind, that they should do this abomination, to cause Judah to sin.” (ESV)
God calls this murder. He calls it an abomination. God has never changed His opinion of this either. Did you notice the second word used here, witchcraft or sorcery. That is the Greek word φαρμάκων (pharmakon). We do indeed get the word pharmacy or pharmaceuticals from this word. He tells us this was also still being practiced.
This word means a harmful drug, poison…a drug used as a controlling medium, magic potion, charm… a healing remedy, medicine, remedy, drug. (Arndt, et al. 2000, 1050)
We will talk even more about this when we discuss the mark of the beast, which is tied into sorcery/pharmaceuticals. This is not only about the use of illegal mind-altering substances, which the Lord considers sorcery, but there is more to it. And for those who say abortion is not in the Bible, it is indeed one more strike against that idea.
Abortion has been practiced for millennia; through most of history, it was induced by herbal chemistry. Both contraceptives and abortion-inducing agents were used by a variety of cultures. An inscription from ancient Sumer lists what is likely a recipe for inducing abortion, and Egyptian papyri dating as far back as 1500 BC make references to chemicals being used to induce abortion (Riddle, Eve’s Herbs, 35, 68). The earliest medical writing from Egypt, dated around 1850 BC, contains recipes for preventing conception (Riddle, Contraception and Abortion, 67). Chemically induced abortions appear to have been attempted in ancient Sumer, Assyria, Egypt, Greece, and Rome. (Davidson 2016)
Murder does not only involve the sword/scalpel, but it also involves the appropriate use of pharmaceuticals / biotechnology.
The most alarming use of biotechnology is in developing “genetic weapons”. The integration of biology with AI computation has facilitated scientists’ understanding of how different population groups have differing susceptibility to diseases and disorders, and their responses to medicines. It has now become possible to design and develop precise genetic weapons that could be deployed stealthily over wide areas, and such weapons would affect only targeted people, of specific ethnic group or race. (Narwal, Maj Gen (Retd) 2021)
Around 2017, the Energy Department’s national laboratories started having significant concerns about biosecurity with regard to China. A Chinese general who was head of the National Defense University in Beijing publicly declared an interest in using gene sequencing and editing to develop pathogenic bioweapons that would target specific ethnic groups, which may be the most evil idea I have ever encountered. (Geraghty 2023)
What we are seeing here is that in the Tribulation, these research programs will redefine what we mean by WMD.
So, we have talked about murder and witchcraft, the next word is sexual immorality, the Greek word πορνείας (porneias) and yes we get pornography from the word. It is any kind of sexual immorality and would also include the idea of human trafficking for the purposes of prostitution.
Then there is the final word used. Remember, this is a world of idol worshipping self centered folks we are talking about.
It is thefts, and yes, it is plural. The word is κλεμμάτων (klemmaton).
When God deals with a world that kills the faithful by sending a plague of death in return (6:10; 9:18), nothing changes. If the powers of heaven operate by inflicting death, the people of earth simply do the same (9:21). Similarly, the plague visions showed God’s angels harnessing demonic forces to do his bidding, and the people of earth respond by doing the same through sorcery (pharmakeia, 9:21). (Koester 2014, 474)
The sins the earth dwellers continue to embrace, they are the major sins of our culture today. The idea that we can forge our own future and do so without God, is the ultimate in diol worship. We worship ourselves rather than Him and this will not change in the Tribulation.
As we finish this 6th Trumpet Judgement, we note the condition of the planet and the ever-decreasing odds of survival during this period. You really do not want to be here for this and right now, you still have the opportunity to avoid it and get evacuated with the rest of us when Jesus returns for His church.
Romans 3:21–24
“But now God has shown us a way to be made right with him without keeping the requirements of the law, as was promised in the writings of Moses and the prophets long ago. We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are. For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. Yet God, in his grace, freely makes us right in his sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins.” (NLT)
Romans 10:9–13
“If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved. As the Scriptures tell us, “Anyone who trusts in him will never be disgraced.” Jew and Gentile are the same in this respect. They have the same Lord, who gives generously to all who call on him. For “Everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved.”” (NLT)
ABC’s of Salvation
A. Acknowledge that you are a sinner, tell Him that.
B. Believe that Jesus died on the cross for our sin and that He rose from the dead.
C. Confess that Jesus is Lord. Tell someone about what you have done.
