Pulpit Curriculum: Driven By Mission

September 15th – 21st, 2024

Sermon Summary

The primary mission of every Christian is to make disciples, it is a mission that defines us, fuels us, and gives direction to everything we do. A core belief of Harvest Bible Chapel Barbados is that the distinctive identity of a true disciple, is borne out in his Worship of Christ, his Walk with Christ and his Work for Christ. As the Preacher delved into the Sermon, he steered listeners to the vital importance that every believer, is called and commissioned to reproduce what God has produced in him and affirmed that when a believer keep the three areas of worship, walk, and work in balance, that he live a life fully driven by the mission Christ has given him. From this sermon the believer is encouraged to live a life that is anchored in his worship of Christ, nurtured by his relationship in his walk with Christ and expressed through his work for Christ.

Verse of the Week

Acts 1:8
8 “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

Going Deeper

Review: Psalm 96:1-3, John 4: 24, Colossians 2:6-7, Ephesians 2:10

1) Using Scripture references, from both the Old and New Testament, discuss what is your understanding of worship.

a) The writer of Exodus 34, said that “Moses did not k now that the skin of his face shone because he had been talking with God.” What impact does Moses’ experience have on your understanding of worship?
Give reasons for your response.

2) The preacher stated that “Our mission flows naturally from our relationship with Christ. As we walk with Him, He opens our eyes to opportunities to serve and make disciples”. List at least two persons in Scripture, who demonstrated this statement to be true.

3) Many biblical scholars have debated the texts found in Ephesians 2 and James 2 as it relates to faith and works; when you reflect on today’s message, what conclusions do you draw?

4) After listening to this message Driven by Missions and reviewing the scriptures used, how would you summarize your understanding of the Great Commission and the connection between the believer’s
worshipping of Christ, walking with Christ and working for Christ.

Assess Your Life

The following questions are meant to encourage personal reflection and identify areas for spiritual growth in your relationship with God. Ask yourself the questions, respond honestly, write down your responses, and then prayerfully seek God’s conviction and guidance to move forward to repentance and restoration. In discussions with your friends and family, or in your Small Group, be open to sharing your responses with others in a spirit of accountability and transparency.

Believers inherited the command from Jesus to go and make disciples…

  1. Are you actively obeying this command?

1b. If you are not, what hinders you?

  2. How does Christ’s assurance of His never-ending presence encourage you to fulfill the mission?

  3. Do you understand the connection between the 3W’s, Worship Walk and Work and the call to Missions?

Application

One key objective of this Pulpit Curriculum is taking God’s truth as exposed in the sermon and helping people apply that truth in practical and intentional ways to plot a course toward obedience and transformation. This section is intended to achieve that objective.

1) Make a list of any adjustments you need to make in your resolve to obey Jesus’ command to make
disciples.

2) Reflect on where you are spiritually and honestly answer the question “do I need to refocus my motives
and intentions to come in alignment with the mission?”

3) What missing elements of the mission will you commit to working on during this week?

 Commit to spending time in prayer and reflection this week about your role in the mission.

I will ask_____ to hold me accountable in this.

Sermon Main Points

As followers of Christ, we are called to live with purpose and intentionality, we are called to be disciples and are commissioned to make disciples. As we seek to obey this commandment, we must:

Be Anchored in God’s Glory (Psalm 96:1-3; John 4:24) Psalm 9:1-3
If we are not first captured by the glory of God, we will struggle to declare His greatness to the world.
Worship is the foundation that drives everything we do. The mission to make disciples is not primarily about our efforts; it’s about the overflow of what God is doing in us through worship.

Follow Christ in Obedience and Relationship Colossians 2:6-7
Believers have been created in Christ Jesus to do good works which God prepared in advanced. Work is not just a matter of employment or tasks, but the expression of God’s calling on our lives. Our mission is not simply to enjoy God’s presence or grow in relationship with Him - it is to take the life and love we receive from Christ and pour it out in service to others.

Sermon Quotes

 Worship is where our mission begins.

 Our mission flows naturally from our relationship with Christ. As we walk with Him, He opens our eyes to
opportunities to serve and make disciples.

 Before we can go out into the world to work for Christ or walk with Him daily, we must first be anchored in His presence and glory.

 When we are anchored in God’s glory and walking closely with Him, the work we do becomes a joyful
response to His love.

 Being Driven by Mission is not about choosing between worship, walking, or working for Christ - it’s about living in the balance of all three.
