Build Community Title 1.jpg
Devotional for August 12-17, 2024

Message Recap:

This message delves into the profound theme of authenticity using the story of Adam and Eve from Genesis 3 as a foundation. We’re reminded that hiding from God and others is a byproduct of sin, leading to broken relationships and inauthentic living. Pastor Brent draws a powerful parallel between God clothing Adam and Eve after their sin and how Christ clothes us in righteousness when we confess our sins. This imagery emphasizes God’s grace and forgiveness, inviting us to live authentically before Him and others. The message challenges us to consider: Are we truly being our authentic selves, or are we hiding behind facades? It encourages us to embrace confession - both to God and to trusted others - as a path to healing and genuine community.

Weekly Devotional:

Day 1: Authenticity in God’s Presence - Genesis 3:1-13

God’s question “Where are you?” echoes through time, inviting us into authentic relationship with Him. Just as Adam and Eve hid after their sin, we often hide our true selves from God and others.

Today, reflect on areas where you might be hiding from God.Remember, He seeks us not to condemn, but to restore. His invitation to authenticity is an act of love. How can you step out of hiding and into the light of God’s presence today?

Day 2: The Power of Confession - 1 John 1:5-10

“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us…” These words remind us of the transformative power of confession. God doesn’t demand perfection but honesty. When we bring our shortcomings into the light, we experience His forgiveness and cleansing.

Today, take time to confess any hidden sins to God. Feel the weight lift as you embrace His forgiveness. Consider: How might regular confession reshape your relationship with God and others?

Day 3: Community and Vulnerability - James 5:13-16

James encourages us to “confess your sins to each other and pray for each other.” This radical vulnerability builds authentic community. It’s not about exposing ourselves to everyone, but cultivating deep, trusting relationships where we can be fully known.

Who are your “PIE” people - those you can share with Physically, Intellectually, Emotionally, and Spiritually? If you don’t have these relationships, pray for God to bring them into your life.

Day 4: Clothed in Christ’s Righteousness - Colossians 3:9-14

Paul speaks of “taking off the old self” and being clothed in Christ’s virtues. This imagery reminds us of God clothing Adam and Eve after their sin - a foreshadowing of Christ’s redemption. When we confess and turn to God, He clothes us in His righteousness.

Today, meditate on what it means to be “clothed in Christ.” How does this new identity empower you to live authentically?

Day 5: Living in the Light - Ephesians 5:8-14

“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light.” As followers of Christ, we’re called to step out of darkness and into His light. This means embracing authenticity, even when it’s uncomfortable.

Reflect on areas of your life that you keep hidden. How might bringing these into the light - both with God and trusted others - lead to freedom and growth? Remember, in Christ, there is no condemnation, only an invitation to wholeness.
