Devotional Series: Living Above Temptation
Introduction
In this series, we explore the Biblical truths about overcoming temptation, as inspired by the sermon. Each day offers a focused reading and reflection to empower you to walk in victory.
Day 1: Overcoming Temptation
Reading: James 4:7-8, Luke 4:1-13
Devotional
Just as Jesus faced temptation in the wilderness, we too face daily battles against our flesh and the enemy’s schemes. The key to victory lies not in our own strength, but in submitting to God and resisting the devil. When we draw near to God, He promises to draw near to us. Today, reflect on areas where you feel tempted. Instead of relying on willpower alone, ask God for His strength and guidance. Remember that Jesus has already overcome the world and its temptations on our behalf. We can stand firm in His victory.
- Reflect on areas of personal temptation
- Seek God’s strength rather than willpower
Day 2: The Power of God’s Word
Reading: Hebrews 4:12-13, 2 Timothy 3:16-17
Devotional:
In His confrontation with Satan, Jesus consistently responded with “It is written,” wielding the sword of God’s Word. This reminds us of the living, active power of Scripture to penetrate our hearts and minds. As you face challenges today, meditate on God’s promises and truths. Let His Word shape your thoughts and actions. Consider memorizing a verse that speaks to your current struggles, using it as a shield against temptation and doubt.
- Memorize a verse to combat current struggles
- Use God’s Word as a shield against temptation
Day 3: Renewed in Christ
Reading: 2 Corinthians 5:17, Romans 6:1-14
Devotional:
In Christ, we are new creations. Our old sinful nature no longer has dominion over us. Yet sometimes we still struggle with old habits and thought patterns. Today, focus on your identity in Christ. You are no longer a slave to sin, but alive to God. When temptation comes, remind yourself of this truth. Choose to “offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life.” Ask the Holy Spirit to help you live out this new reality in practical ways.
- Focus on your identity in Christ
- Remind yourself of your victory over sin
Day 4: The Battlefield of the Mind
Reading: Romans 12:1-2, Philippians 4:8
Devotional:
Many of our spiritual battles begin in our minds. The enemy often attacks through distorted thoughts or misleading ideas about God and ourselves. To combat this, we must actively renew our minds with God’s truth. Today, pay attention to your thought patterns. When negative or tempting thoughts arise, practice “taking every thought captive to obey Christ” (2 Cor. 10:5). Replace lies with biblical truths. Fill your mind with whatever is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and admirable.
- Pay attention to your thought patterns
- Practice taking every thought captive
Day 5: Standing Firm in God’s Strength
Reading: Ephesians 6:10-18, 1 Corinthians 10:13
Devotional:
We are in a spiritual battle, but we don’t fight alone. God provides us with spiritual armor and the power of His might. He also promises that no temptation we face is beyond our ability to endure with His help. Today, visualize putting on each piece of the armor of God. Thank Him for His protection and strength. When you feel weak or overwhelmed, remember that God is faithful. He will always provide a way out of temptation. Trust in His power, not your own, to stand firm against the enemy’s schemes.
- Visualize putting on spiritual armor
- Thank God for His protection
- Trust in God’s power to overcome
Blessings as you pursue victory in Christ!
