  1. Who was Jesus speaking to in this sermon?
  2. Who was in the audience for the sermon?
  3. Do you think this is the same event or a different event as the Sermon on the Mount? (Matt. 5-7)
  4. Some of the people in the audience this day had traveled around 100 miles to see Jesus. (cf. v.17) What makes this so significant?
  5. How does the modern world understand being blessed?
  6. What does Jesus mean when He says “blessed” here?
  7. Why are the poor blessed?
  8. Why are the hungry and those who weep blessed in the Kingdom?
  9. This is a wonderful encouragement to those who are poor and hungry and weeping. How do verses 22 and 23 help us to realize that Jesus isn’t simply speaking of worldly money and food and happiness?
  10. God has always had a heart for those who are hurting. The Old Testament is filled with God commanding people to care for the poor and the stranger. (cf. Ex. 22:21-23; Lev.23:22; Deut. 15:10; 1 Sam. 2:8; Isa. 1:17; Ps. 34) Considering that, why is Jesus’ teaching here so revolutionary?
