Old Testament prophecies

Isaiah 49:1-7 (NIV) says:
1Listen to me, you islands; hear this, you distant

: Before I was born the Lord called me; from my mother’s womb he has spoken my name. 2He made my mouth like a sharpened sword, in the shadow of his hand he hid me; he made me into a polished arrow and concealed me in his quiver. 3He said to me, “You are my servant, Israel, in whom I will display my splendor.” 4But I said, “I have labored in vain; I have spent my strength for nothing at all. Yet what is due me is in the Lord’s hand, and my reward is with my God.” 5And now the Lord says—he who formed me in the to be his servant to bring Jacob back to him and gather Israel to himself, for I am honored in the eyes of the Lord and my God has been my strength— 6he says: “It is too small a thing for you to be my servant to the tribes of and bring back those of I have kept. I will also make you a for the , that my may reach to the ends of the earth.” 7This is what the Lord says—the and Holy One of Israel—to him who was despised and abhorred by the nation, to the servant of rulers: “Kings will see you and stand up, princes will see and bow down, because of the Lord, who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel, who has you.”

Q1 Are you aware that the prophet speaks on behalf of God about both Israel and the world? List below in the blue box the verses where Israel is mentioned and where the world is mentioned.

New Testament fulfillments

Luke 4:16-21 (NIV) says:
16He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. He stood up to read, 17and the scroll of the prophet

was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written: 18The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the , to set the oppressed free, 19to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” 20Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21He began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is in your hearing.”

Q2 If Jesus is called to be the light of the world, what does He do in verse 18 and why?

Q3 When we study fulfillment of prophecy, why would Jesus Himself talk about it about Himself (verse 21)? Does this make sense?

Read this document on replacement theology.

In the next passage of Romans the words “Israel” and “Jacob” are used interchangeable.

Romans 11:25-26 (NIV) says:
25I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers and sisters, so that you may not be conceited: Israel has experienced a hardening in part until the

of the has come in, 26and in this way will be saved. As it is written: “The deliverer will come from Zion; he will turn godlessness away from Jacob.

Q4 What means “hardening” in verse 25?

Q5 How long will the hardening be?

Q6 When the full number of the Gentiles have come in (=accept Christ), what happens next?

Romans 11 focusses on the role of Israel in God’s end times plan. Many Christians think that the church has replaced Israel. This theology is unbiblical. Therefore, study verse 26.
