God’s Glory and the Greatness of Worship

The Creator is worthy of our worship!

Introduction: Priming the pump for tonight’s discussion.

This week we summarized Psalms 6-7. We learned about God’s love for us when we are sick and facing physical hardship. He hears our cries! You matter to God and your tears are not lost on Him. Never be afraid to call out to God for help or healing! We also learned that whenever our enemies are out to destroy us, we can put ourselves in the Lord’s hands. As we stand in our integrity, we can trust in God to fight our battles. How did God speak to you in either of these summarized psalms this week? Did you have any personal breakthroughs that you can share with the group?

Exploration: Questions to guide our group discussion.

  1. In Psalm 8 we learned that God’s name is great in the earth and that His glory has been set above the heavens. It is good for us to stop and consider the majesty of all that God has made, and to realize that it all points to the glory of the one who made it! In a world that takes so much for granted, it’s good for us to really stop and think about the glory of God and to let what God’s hands have made fill us with amazement. When was the last time that you stopped to think about the glory of God which is on display before our eyes every day?

  2. One of the more amazing realities for David was the position of man among all of God’s glorious creation. He wrote in amazement that God would visit with men, that God would give men glory in the earth, that God had set him just below the Angels in creation order, and that man had been given dominion over the earth. In all of God’s creation, mankind has been blessed uniquely in this way. How does it speak to your heart to realize that creatures so insignificant have been given such amazing significance by their creator?

  3. In Psalm 9 we learned that worship is first and foremost an issue of the heart. Worship isn’t just singing a song…it’s an expression of God’s value from our human hearts. David was a whole-heart worshiper of God. The overflow of David’s heart of worship for God was manifested in testimonies, rejoicing in God, and in singing praises to God. What is the difference between whole-hearted worship and half-hearted worship…and how does seeing God’s glory connect to worshiping God with our whole heart?

Additional Scriptures for Deeper Study:

  • Romans 1:20
  • Genesis 4:4-5
  • Luke 18:9-14
  • 2 Samuel 6:14
  • Hebrews 12:28

Application: How can I apply this to my life this week?

  1. Perhaps God would show you this week a need to rediscover your awe for God. Our God is an awesome God! Would the Spirit of the Lord compel you to rediscover His glory and to dwell on His awesomeness again?

  2. What is the honest to goodness state of your own heart for worship? If your worship is the expression of the value that you have in your heart for God, would you say that your gifts of worship are declaring a value that matches His worth?
