Wonderful Counselor
This series is based in a prophecy promising a savior king more than 700 years before Jesus’ birth
“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.” —Isaiah 9:6–7
If you like winning, find proven counselors, advisors, coaches, and guides.
“Without counsel plans fail, but with many advisers they succeed.” —Proverbs 15:22
But beware! Destructive counselors are everywhere.
“Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; 2 but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night.” —Psalm 1:1–2
How do you assess counselors, advisors, coaches, and guides?
1. Their breadth of wisdom, mastery, experience, education
“Have you not known? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. 29 He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength.” —Isaiah 40:28–29
2. Their motivations
Selfish Benefit?
Assuage their own guilt?
Spread their worldview?
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. 11 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” —John 10:10–11
3. Their outcomes and results (practitioner or theoretician?)
“God] saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began, 10 and which now has been manifested through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel” —2 Timothy 1:9–10
CONCLUSION: Jesus is the best Counselor you’ve got.
“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.” —James 1:5
