22 For in my inner self I delight in God’s law, 23 but I see a different law in the parts of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and taking me prisoner to the law of sin in the parts of my body. 24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death?—Romans 7:22-24

Christians want to please God

Christians do not want to sin

Christians seek to answer the question, “how do I sin less?”

Our worst enemy is our flesh.

Lord, deliver me from that evil man: myself. -Augustine

All the fire that the devil could bring from hell could do us little harm were there not such combustible material and fuel in ourselves. We sit on a veritable magazine of powder – this old nature, this unregenerate self. -W.A. Criswell

16 I say, then, walk by the Spirit and you will certainly not carry out the desire of the flesh. 17 For the flesh desires what is against the Spirit, and the Spirit desires what is against the flesh; these are opposed to each other, so that you don’t do what you want. —Galatians 5:16-17

If you want your life to be less like Jesus, then live according to your flesh.

19 Now the works of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, moral impurity, promiscuity, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatreds, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambitions, dissensions, factions, 21 envy, drunkenness, carousing, and anything similar. I am warning you about these things—as I warned you before—that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. —Galatians 5:19-21

8 When he comes, he will convict the world about sin, righteousness, and judgment: —John 16:8

If you want your life to look more like Jesus, then live according to the Spirit

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. The law is not against such things. 24 Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another. —Galatians 5:22-26

Every temptation is an opportunity to say no -Rick Warren
