God Wants to Awaken Me

Daily Prayer: “Jesus, open my eyes to your working around me today. Give me the eyes to see and the ears to hear what you’re doing. And give me opportunities to join you in that work. Amen.”

Big Idea: Experiencing God happens through awakenings!

The Problem: Can these dry bones live again?

1 The Lord took hold of me, and I was carried away by the Spirit of the Lord to a valley filled with bones. 2 He led me around among the old, dry bones that covered the valley floor. They were scattered everywhere across the ground. 3 Then he asked me, ‘Son of man, can these dry bones become living again?’

‘O Sovereign Lord,’ I replied, ‘You alone know the answer to that.’ 4 Then he said to me, ‘Speak to these bones and say, ‘Dry bones, listen to the word of the Lord. 5 This is what the Sovereign Lord says; Look! I am going to breathe into you and make you live again! 6 I will put flesh and muscle on you and cover you with skin. I will put breath into you, and you will come to life. Then you will know that I am the Lord.’

7 So I spoke these words, just as he told me. Suddenly as I spoke, there was a rattling noise all across the valley. The bones of each body came together and attached themselves as they had been before. 8 Then as I watched, muscle and flesh formed over the bones. Then skin formed to cover their bodies, but they still had no breath in them.

9 Then he said to me, ‘Speak to the winds and say: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Come, O breath, from the four winds! Breathe into these dead bodies so that they may live again.’

10 So I spoke as he commanded me, and the wind entered the bodies, and they began to breathe. They all came to life and stood up on their feet—a great army of them. 11 Then he said to me, ‘Son of man, these bones represent the people of Israel. They are saying, ‘We have become old, dry bones—all hope is gone.’

12 Now give them this message from the Sovereign Lord: ‘O my people, I will open your graves of exile and cause you to rise again. Then I will bring you back to the land of Israel. 13 When this happens, O my people, you will know that I am the Lord. 14 I will put my Spirit in you, and you will live and return home to your own land. Then you will know that I am the Lord. You will see that I have done everything just as I promised. I, the Lord, have spoken!’” —Ezekiel 37:1-14

The Promise: I will pour out my Spirit

14 I will put my Spirit in you, and you will live…” —Ezekiel 37:14

28 I will pour out my Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophecy. Your old men will dream dreams. Your young men will see visions. 29 In those days, I will pour out my Spirit even on servants, men and women alike.” —Joel 2:28-29

1 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like a blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.” —Acts 2:1-4

14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say… 16 This is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: 17 ‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophecy, your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams. 18 Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophecy.’” —Acts 2:14-18

38 Peter replied, ‘Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 This promise is to you, to your children, and to those far away—all who have been called by the Lord our God.” —Acts 2:38-39

The Provision: The Spirit breathes new life

63 The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of Spirit and life.” —John 6:63

14 I will put my Spirit in you, and you will live…” —Ezekiel 37:14
