Part 3 - Made For His Voice
September 18, 2022
- In Part 1, “One Thing”, we saw that we are made for His Presence.
Then they began to understand the effect Jesus had on them simply by spending time with him. —Acts 4:13 - TPT
In Part 2, we looked at the “Gateway Church” in Genesis 28.
We can look at Jacob’s life and see ourselves in his journey and his story.
We saw an overview of the supernatural characteristics of the house that God is building.
16 Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it.” 17 And he was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven!” —Genesis 28:16-17
A gateway church is made up of gateway believers with a one-thing posture that prioritizes God’s Presence.
Gateway believers have an encounter, and become an encounter, so that others can have an encounter.
10 Now Jacob went out from Beersheba and went toward Haran. 11 So he came to a certain place and stayed there all night, because the sun had set. And he took one of the stones of that place and put it at his head, and he lay down in that place to sleep. 12 Then he dreamed, and behold, a ladder was set up on the earth, and its top reached to heaven; and there the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. 13 And behold, the Lord stood above it and said: “I am the Lord God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and your descendants. —Genesis 28:10-13
- The gateway church is a place of His voice. “Said” - to speak.
1. God made you to hear His voice.
And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. —Gen 3:8 KJV
- The garden was not just the place they lived, but the place that the Lord communed with them.
2. Just like you are born with the ability to hear and see, you are born again with the ability to spiritually hear and see.
God is a Spirit. —John 4:24a
Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. —1 Thessalonians 5:23
a. Body. Our 5 senses - sight, sound, taste, smell, touch.
b. Soul. Mind, will, and emotions.
c. Spirit. Communion, conscience, and intuition.
- Your spirit is where you hear the voice of God, who is a Spirit.
3. We learn to recognize God’s voice.
My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. —John 10:27
4 The Lord God has given Me
The tongue of the learned,
That I should know how to speak
A word in season to him who is weary.
He awakens Me morning by morning,
He awakens My ear
To hear as the learned.
5 The Lord God has opened My ear;
And I was not rebellious,
Nor did I turn away. —Isaiah 50:4-5Then Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you also want to go away?” 68 But Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.
69 Also we have come to believe and know that You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” —John 6:67-69
- When we
4.The Lord speaks to us in different ways, but all of them share the same witness of the Holy Spirit.
The witness is the “yes”, the knowing deep in your spirit that the Lord is communicating.
The Lord speaks through conviction. The Holy Spirit convinces us of sin, righteousness, and judgment. John 16:8.
A lot of people expect God to tell them
Today, if you will hear His voice:
8 “Do not harden your hearts, as in the rebellion,
As in the day of trial in the wilderness, —Psalm 95:7b-8
5. The ways God speaks [bonus]. Most of these have to do with either hearing or seeing.
a. Scriptures.
- The scriptures are the basis for all hearing from God. God speaks through what He has spoken. Deuteronomy 8:3.
b. Audible Voice.
- This is not an “impression”. It is a word for word communication from God to us.
- I Samuel 3 - Samuel, Samuel.
- Acts 9 - Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me.
c. The “still small voice”…the whisper of God. I Kings 19:13.
- Along with a rhema word, this is one of the most common ways that believers hear from the Lord.
- It is sometimes thought to be our own conscience or “inner voice” speaking, in that it comes in our own thoughts and ideas.
d. Visions. Joel 2:28-29, Acts 9:10-12
- Visions come both to the natural eye (external) and to the eyes of the heart (internal). The latter are pictures in the mind, which are the visual equivalent of the still small voice. Lean into God and they come into focus.
e. Dreams – Joel 2:28-29
- Daydream – could be like an Acts 10 trance. It’s where your in the presence of the Lord, and God speaks to you as your mind begins to wander of. You might think it’s your imagination, but discernment shows that the Lord is speaking to you.
- Night dream.
f. Mysterious sayings or events. Proverbs 25:2
- When God speaks by hiding truths in phrases, stories, riddles, and circumstances. The meaning is there for us to find.
- A recurring number.
- Unusual circumstances…burning bush, fleece. Highly unusual situations that usually seem to have no meaning in and of themselves. God brings these events into our lives to get our attention, hoping we will “turn aside” from our agendas and plans. “When the Lord saw that he turned aside to look, God called to him from the midst of the bush and said, Moses, Moses, and he said, Here am I.”
g. The Leading of the Spirit - Acts 16:6-9.
- Impressions – Acts 16. In obeying the general command, a specific leading came. Vs. 6 – “and were forbidden of the Holy Spirit to preach the word in Asia”. Vs. 7 – “They tried to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit didn’t allow them to. Vs. 9 – And a vision appeared to Paul in the night. Conviction in your conscience about what you need to do or not do.
h. Prophecy and Prophetic Ministry. 1 Corinthians 12:10, 2 Peter 1:20
- It comes through another person; it can be a very dangerous form of hearing, but also one of the most dramatic and faith-building.
- Evaluate according to the word.
i. The Language of Testimony. Revelation 19:10.
- This is related to prophecy. Old Testament – means “repeat” or do again. There’s often a “living word” in a testimony, God wants to repeat his wonderful works when we speaks of what he has done. In this way, the testimony of Jesus is the Spirit of prophecy (Rev. 19:10).
- In recounting the work of God, God speaks to others in profound ways.
j. Wise Counsel. The speaks through wise counsel, and there is safety in a multitude of counsel. Proverbs 11:14
