Reflections on Sunday’s Sermon
Below is a reference to the section of the New City Catechism that we went over on Sunday:
The New City Catechism
Lord’s Day 18
Will God Allow Our Disobedience and Idolatry to Go Unpunished?
No, every sin is against the sovereignty, holiness, and goodness of God, and against his righteous law, and God is righteously angry with our sins and will punish them in his just judgment both in this life, and in the life to come. (Ephesians 5:5-6)
Scripture
Hebrews 8:1-6 - (English Standard Version)
- 1 Now the point in what we are saying is this: we have such a high priest, one who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven, 2 a minister in the holy places, in the true tent that the Lord set up, not man. 3 For every high priest is appointed to offer gifts and sacrifices; thus it is necessary for this priest also to have something to offer. 4 Now if he were on earth, he would not be a priest at all, since there are priests who offer gifts according to the law. 5 They serve a copy and shadow of the heavenly things. For when Moses was about to erect the tent, he was instructed by God, saying, “See that you make everything according to the pattern that was shown you on the mountain.” 6 But as it is, Christ has obtained a ministry that is as much more excellent than the old as the covenant he mediates is better, since it is enacted on better promises.
Understanding and Applying
- Recap: Based on the book of Hebrews thus far, what are some ways in which the old covenant, rightly understood, should have prepared the people of God for Jesus’ coming?
- True Form: What makes Jesus’ priesthood superior to the Levitical priesthood (vv. 1-2)?
• How does the location of Jesus’ mediatorial work give believers confidence regarding what Jesus has accomplished on their behalf (Hebrews 6:19-20, 10:19-22)?
- Type: Why was the old covenant beneficial, for a time, for the people of God but now obsolete in relation to the new covenant (vv. 5-6)?
- Rejoice: As you consider the fact that you are a saint under the new covenant, as opposed to the old, how does this lead you to give thanks to God?
