Scripture: Isaiah 66:10-14
Takeaway: Maternal figures call us in, offer us comfort, and remind us of our worth.

Take some time to share:
• One thing that you are thankful for this week.

• One thing you need.

• How can the group help?

Bible Discussion: Read Isaiah 66:10-14
• What about this passage stands out to you as you read?

• We often refer to God as father, but this passage calls us to imagine Him as mother. How might that change our understanding of God?

• Is there anything more content than a well-fed baby in their mother’s arms? What does this imagery communicate to the people who are just returning from exile?

Application:
God is promising a physical renewal, but by portraying himself as mother, he is also promising an emotional comfort that material things cannot offer. Think of a time in your life when your mother, grandmother, or other maternal figures offered you something more than what you were asking for. A warm meal is often more than the nutrients it provides your body. What was it that they offered to you?

• Often times, in the face of tragedy, we are uncertain of what we can offer those who are mourning or suffering. What does this passage teach about the value of comfort?

• How can we embody what God is demonstrating in this passage?

• How can we find comfort in his words ourselves?

Challenge: A mother’s love is often seen as unconditional. God’s love definitely comes without condition. Many of us tend to attach strings to our love & affection…whether unintentionally or intentionally. It’s hard to just love others, because we often are trying to get our own needs met as well. This week, decide to love one person unconditionally…without criticism or demands. Be their place of comfort & rest, the way that God is our place of comfort & rest!
