Luke 18:31-34
31 Jesus took the Twelve aside and told them, “We are going up to Jerusalem, and everything that is written by the prophets about the Son of Man will be fulfilled. 32 He will be delivered over to the Gentiles. They will mock him, insult him and spit on him; 33 they will flog him and kill him. On the third day he will rise again.”
34 The disciples did not understand any of this. Its meaning was hidden from them, and they did not know what he was talking about.
Read Luke 18:31-33
- Why do you think Jesus took to the time to tell the disciples what was about to happen? Why do you think he called them aside and told them privately?
- What passages from the Old Testament are you aware of that foretold what Jesus was about to endure? (Click here for a resource outlining some of those passages).
- Why is it important for us to understand that Jesus knew exactly what he was walking into when he made his way to Jerusalem?
Read Luke 18:34
- In that moment, the disciples failed to understand what Jesus was saying. It was not until later that they came to understand the significance and power of what he had said. Tell about a time when, in the moment, you did not understand what God was saying or doing. Later on, did God’s meaning or intention become clear? How did that happen?
- What is it like to live in the “in between time” where you know God is speaking and acting, but you don’t entirely understand it? How do you personally keep going under those circumstances?
- Sometimes we fail to understand what God is doing around us because it just doesn’t fit our expectations. What might the disciples have been expecting that kept them from understanding what he was talking about?
- What expectations do you have about how God “ought to” act that keep you from grasping what he is saying and doing in your life.
